Much ns the people genoraly dis trust and fear a session of the legisla ture, they are rolling In the petitions for a speolnl session. While the organs of the politicians and grafters are opposing the propo sition of enacting lint salaries, the people, regardless of party, are de manding this roforin. Petitions have been received since the last report from citizens of Wll holt, Clackamas county; Fairfield and ScotU Mills, Marlon county; forty cit izens and business men of Independ ence, Folk county; citizens of Salem and OorvalB; of Gervals, Macleay, Pmtum, Mnrion and Savor. The above have boon transmitted to Governor fler and placed on file, and new pqtltlons are being rlrculnted by scores of persons. When It Is considered that without cnuso tho Orogonlnn opposes tho spo clal session, llos about it, and tolls tho people It Is not needed, and all Its llttlo yapping cchoos nro also say ing so, It Ib romnrknhlo whnt an In terest Is mnnlfoHted In tho mattor. This Is tho opportunity of tho com mon cltlzon, thu poor man, tho com mon votor, to have a voice In public affairs, of which the groat editors and political intitiayors are supposed nlonc to have n monopoly. Do not fall to got a petition nnd put your name to it. Her daughter. Mrs. Marin Olllottl, In endeavoring to wive her mother from tho llames, wns nlso severely burned about the face gone before the people on them. ami uiiium. ant- win no iiimisurtMl 101 a niuiii iur nf OBJECT LESSON IN GOVERNMENT. j The city of Salem put all officials on a flat salary, and put all fees and per quisites In the treasury, and wont from an nnnual deficit to a cash surplus and wiped out $60,000 of debt. The Marlon county Republicans did the same, nnd wlpod out f 100,000 debt, and reduced the county tax nearly three mills. If the state government will do tho same In ncconlance with tho senti ments of the Marion county Koptibll can platform, the state tax will be reduced one-half in four years. That is the opinion of as conserva tive a man as Tllmon Ford, who is not booming Geer for senator, but is a big taxpayer, and a lawyer of some standing. He stumped for Furnish, too. Willi the flat salary law in offect, and all fees and perquisites In tho treasury, the state officials would got $8S,O0O a year leas, and would still be well iald. Anything wrong in that? With the fees and perquisites going Into the state treasury the state would be taking in $25,000 a year, whore It Is now paying out $86,000 a year In ex cessive compensation to the stato printer, and for salaries on boards and commissions. ' The state run as Salem and Marlon county are run, the taxpayer would be $M,000 a year ahead, or $200,000 In four years, nnd that can only be ac complished by calling a special ses sion. Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Wo answer for the thir teenth time, because after officials elected are sworn In and tako posses sion of their otllcos for tholr four-yoar term, their salaries and compensation cannot be reduced honestly and con sistently In accordance with the words of the Republican state platform. Do the Republicans nnd citizens of all parties neod n grontor object les son than what hns boon accomplished In Salem and Mnrloh county, nnd which Is still being accomplished bo fore their oyes. by mittlnir nil nf. flcinls on lint snlnrlos, and putting all fees and perquisites In the treasury. where it belongs. If thnt pledge wore not In the Re publican and Democratic platforms the Jtopubllcnns and Domocrnts would still be morally bound to tako notice of what has been accomplished in this city and county by u common-sense program. They have the object lesson thnt hns become familiar, and has beenmn noticed by the rank nnd file of both parties, and they will not forglvo tholr representatives and lawmakers if thoy are blind to these patent facts espec lally after they have put the pledoe to ao tnese things In their platforms, and A Physician's Tests.
