Police Court This Morning.

no attraction to a transient muto, who
was arralgnod In the pollco court this
morning for drunkonnoss. Tho man
was arrested Thursday night, while- in
an Intoxicated condition, by tho pollco
olllcers, who woro unablo to learn tho
stranger's namo, or his destination.

orod up, and realized that ho was in
Jail, bo spont tho night weeping, and
his grief was not assumed, olthor.
When brought Into court this morn
ing, City Recordor Judah wroto upon
pupor requesting of tho strangor his
nnino. The mute gazed at tho hand
writing for an instant, and In reply
wroto a sontonco Insisting thnt tho
questioner should print tho sentonco
outlining tho desired information. Now
this should not bo construed ns a re
flection on tho geidal city rocordor's
penmanship, for he has always prided
hliUHolf upon writing a legible hand.
Tho recorder ovldontly did not appre
ciate the Inference thnt might ho
tnkeu from the man's query, and in
large letters printed the following sen
tence: "You had hotter leave town
at ," but before ho could produco
the last word, tho fellow walked hasti
ly to Chief Gibson, whom he caressed,
and, with eyes raised heavenward, he
wildly gestulated his arms, ns a sup
posed expression of gratification for
the lenient sontenco. Ho then ap
proached City Recordor Judah where
tho same exhibition was ropeated. I3y
this time the police Judge had finished
thu sentence by tho addition of tho
word "once." and having underlined
the last two words, he directed tho at
tention of the muto to tho admonition.

Graves Generally Beautified
and Decorated.
Tho nation's soldier dead was hon
ored at Salem today when annual
Memorial day exercises woro held.
Tho day was cool and pleasant, and
hundredB turned out Business houses,
public buildings and residences wcro
more generally and elaborately decor
ated than usual. Business houses
wero closed at noon, and all Salem de
voted tho afternoon In honoring tho
nation's heroes.
At 10 o'clock members of tho
Union Veterans Union and tho ladles
of tho G. A. R. assembled at their hall
on State street aud proceeded to tho
Leo Mission cemetery, whoro tho
craves of deceased cbmrados wero
decorated.
Tho procession, headed by tho G. A.
R., to City Vlow cemetery, wherein aro
hurled tho deceased members of that
organization, was formed at 1:30
o'clock this afternoon under tho dl
rectlon of Captain J. Q. Barnes, as
chief marshal, and aides. Tho Salem
Military band waB in attendance, and
to martial music the lino of march,
previously published, was followed
and tho pageant moved to tho come'
tery, where tho. G. A. R. ritualistic ser
vices wero conducted, 'nnd tho graves
of tho dead soldiers In tho G. A. It.
plot decorated.
A squad of tho Oregon National
Guard llrcd tho usual salute over tho
graves.
Thero was a continuous stream of
people, laden with llowcrs, going to
tho cemetery during Thursday even
Iiik and Friday morning, and tho
gravos wero well decorated. A de
ferred season hns resulted In a Beard
ty of roses, but thero was this year a
greater profusion of other flowers than
last season, nnd tho decorations woro
very general, anil more olaborato than
usual.
Tho appearance of all tho cometerles
hns boon much Improved the past two
weeks, nnd thoy novor looked better
at this time of year.
Upon returning to the city, after tho
exorcises, tho old veterans were
served dinner by tho ladles of tho W.
R. C. in tho Turner building.
