To remedy a wrong you .can petition, of courso; but that Is nn old nnd almost useless mothod. I remember on one occasion a cortnlu petition was aunt to tho legislature of New Jersoy, and the legislators made the petition Into paper halls and tossed them at ouch other. "Direct legislation give tho people power to end a bnd law, and to niako a good one. Only the people should have the right to mnke and unmake laws, and the y betray their trust. Do you know that In Greater New York the citizen Is ruled by 60,000 laws, and that Ignorance of those laws is no excuse for breaking them? In 44 stutee legislative seeelons were held In the year beginlng October 1,. 1000 and ending September 90, 1901. These occupied 3,404 days, or an average of over 70 days each. The longest ses sion was in Pennsylvania, of 179 days and by all accounts the most corrupt. The shortest regular seewlon was In Washington, of 86 days. Three other states had extra sessions, and Michi gan endured two extra sessions. These legislative sessions passed 13.4M laws and 113S resolutions, with S40 In Virginia and 301 In New Hamp shire, unclassified, making a total of 14,100. or an average to eacli state of S22 laws. "North Carolina passed the lamest number, with 119 to her credit in 88 days, or Harly 11 laws a day, and Ala bama cam Hxt witli 1121 laws la 111 days, or 10 a day. Michigan ealleel IU legislature for a second extra seating, and Uey sat fw 11 days, but did .sot Itaas a simile law. Oklahoma pawed 7o laws in M days of regular session.
