Compelled to Liquidate.
Deputy Sheriff 11. U. Collmth went
to Hubbard this morning to assist As
sessor Charles Lcmbckc In enforcing
the collection of tho J 1.00 poll tax from
a gung of about soventy Japanese rail
road laborers, who arc In the employ
of the Southern Pacific Company In
the north end of tho county.
Assossor Leinbcke, who. Is personal
ly assisting In tho listing of property
In the north end of tho county for the
l'J02 tax roll, attempted to collect the
ll.oo tax from the gang ono day last
week, but, with the exception of only
a few,' all refused to liquidate the
amount of tho tax. Mr. Lembcko
asked for assistance from tho sheriff's
olllce In accomplishing tho col
lection, and, after some, correspond'
once with the railroad officials, County
Judgo Scott was directed to proceed
with the collection of tho polls, wltlv
the understanding that such laborors
as refused to pay the same would be
obliged to forfeit their Jobs. Mr. Col
bath was armed .with tlieso Instruc
tions when he went to Hubbard UiLh
morning, and no furthor dlfllculty Is
anticipated In making tho collection
of the usual' poll tax from tho Japs.
Under tho law regarding the listing
and assessment of property, county as
sessors are authorized to collect tho

"Shorty" Has
Left Town
Herbert W. Hnrtle, more generally
known as "Shorty, tho Shiner," by tho
tonus of nn agreement with tho munic
ipal authorities, tills morning shook
tho dust of Salem from hlH feet and
loft for pints unknown. Of recent
months Hnrtle litis been getting drunk
repeatedly, nnd has caused the police
olllcers endless trouble In dealing
with him. On Sunday last ho was
arrested In an Intoxicated condition,
and on the following morning was giv
en a ton-days' sentence In tho city jail.
Ho was nut to work washing windows
nt the city Jn.ll, nnd. In the absence of
the olllcer. slipped nwny, only to bo re
turned nnd forcibly detained with n
ball anil chain attachment. Two days
of this trentment wns enough for
"Shorty," who this morning subscribed
to nn agreement to leave tho city, and
remain nwny for nt least six months,
If his sentence was suspended, He left
on the boat for Portland, Intending to
take n protracted sea voyage. In
event he returns before tho oxplrntlon
of six mouths, the unexpired portion
of his sentence will bo enforced.
