President Lloyd Reynolds called tho meeting of tho Fruit Qrotvors' As sociation to order, and introduced Mr. Holcomb, of tho Portland canning Co., and who Is a stockholder in tho Allen cannory at Salem. Mr. Holcomb mado a plea for moro fruit of dlfferont va rieties, In order to enablo tho cannory to run for n longer season. Ho stated that tho caniucry would bo oporated this season, and that hid company Is prepared to contract now for all tho fruit that will bo raised about Salem this season. Ho also offered to mako contracts for a term of years on black berries and strawberries. Ho offered to contiact for tho strawberry crop, or any portion of It, at three cents per pound Hat, with an option to supply moro fruit at 2 cents. Mr. Holcomb reiterated that tho Salem cannery would be operated tills season, and asked that a committee of tho growers bo appointed to Investigate- what tho intentions of his com pany are. Ho offered to mako flve-ycar con tracts for 40 acres of red raspberries at 3 cents per pound, aud 15 acres of blackberries at 2V4 cents per pound. Upon Mr. Thcllsen's suggestion, tho" directors of the association woro con stituted a commlttco to look Into tho propositions of tbo canning company, as to contracts, and tho Intentions of tho company to operato tho cannery. Upon request, Mr. Holcomb stated that tho varieties of fruit most wanted woro Wilson, Ideal and Clark straw borrles Law ton blackberries and Cuth bort raspberries.
