The Storm

day morning, Indicted damage to tho
amount of probably (50,000. Vessels at
anchor aud moored to wharves wero
thrown about with violence. One life was
lost. While trying to throw a lino to n
steam launch, Joseph HUcknell, a
quartermaster on the transport Warren,
at anchor in the stream off Folsom street,
lost his balance and lull into the hay.
The only vessel wrecked as a result of
tho galo was the bay suliooner Fauule,
which had taken on a cargo of 70,000 feet
of lumbar for Stockton, and was lying at
section A of tho seawall. The Fuuuio
now Ilea submerged, with a ureal part of
the lumber Uoatlng in the bay.
The worst damage to any wharf was
iutlicted br State Pile Driver No. 2 upon
Meiggs' Wharf. The waves carried tho
plledrlver against the wharf with such
force that the big stringers wero quickly
smuihed, and a hole at least 16 feet de p
through piles and heavy timbers was
made before tho gale subsided, The new
Filbert-street wharf, now under con
struction, was damaged to the extent of
about $10,000. The barkentino City of
Papete and the schooner Alice collided
In Miss on Hay, aud dragged their
anchors.
At Oakland long wharf, the foroo of
the blow was hardly less severe than on
this side of the bay, through few vessels
were there to (eel its effect. Tin bay
schooner Carries Dove, laden with -10 or
50 tons of scrap irou from tho wreck of
tho May Flint, was captiisd and went
to the bottom with her load.

Oregon Volunteers. By a recont
ruling tho volunteers nro to
receivo pay from tho Stato
for their servlcos, as woll as from
the government. During tliolr
service they were paid 52 cents per
day, the regular government rate, aud
tho rate for this state is $1.60 a day
which the men will now receivo.
Gonoral Gantoubein was also to attend
the Interstate National Guard Associa
tion at which was discussed and pre
pared u bill for presentation to tho pres
ent congress. Tho maiu object of
the hill Is to Incroaso the
eflicioucy of the militia of tho varioub
states.
Provisions of the Bill.
It provides that the regularly organ
ized and uniformed active militia in the
Boveral statos who participate in tho ap
portionment of tho annual appropria
tion provided by Congress shall .consti
tute tho active militia, und tho organ
ization, armament and discipline
bhali be the sainu as tlmtof ths regular
and volunteer armies of the United
States.
That whenever necesrary the Presi
dent may cull forth such number of tho
organized militia as he may deem
necessary, fur a period uot exceeding
nine months.
That the Krag Jorgensen ritles
shall be exchanged for the

to the state, the expense to bd paid by
tho government. (This item means a
saving of about $21 ,000 to Oregon.)
