HutghuH last night stoh f!tu,000 worth of stamps from thu Chicago postotllco and OBoapod without leaving thu slightest clue. A tunnel, which has takou a week or more, was run from tho rear of tho building, ami a hole was then drilled through tho steel bottom of tho whoUsale stamp vault, only six feet away from thu cashiers vault, which contained over f300,0u0 in cash. Tho latter evidently had been the objective point. A. 0. Spauldlng, ohluf clerk of tho wholesale stamp department, discovered I tho robbery whon ho opened the vau It this morning. J ES M&& ASSAILANT OF MRS. STRONG Writes a Letter Making Confession. The Whereabouts of the Husband Still Shrouded in Mystery. Tin: JouiisAL is in receipt of tho ap pended letter from a man who claims to hao assaulted Mrs. Frod Strong in this city on Inst Wednesday evening. Is This a Confession? Salrm, Oct. IU. 1P01. Ko. Joi'knam I wish to make a state ment In regard to tho assault mode on Mrs. Strong on tho nightof tho 10th iiiBt, if you will allow mo through the cob umusof your paper. 1 will say in m gard to tho man, Strong, ho may bo a gambler and it very bad man for what I know, but ho is not guilty of tho above assault, as I am tho guilty party, and had I not made a grievous mistake, 1 never should havo written this loiter. Quiltvasltnav seem, 1 am not bad enomrli to let an innocent man suffer for my ciimo. I havo suilered romorposinco I learned mv mistake in tho person; it icrloves mo to learn that I had attacked an Inoffensive woman, especially one who has to work for a living. Last August at tho coast I met a young lady, 1 became jealous of her, sho re pulsed me. Tlien i mauo up my minu io iiavo rovengo. Sho lives in the neigh borhood of street. 1 saw her as I thought, go out in company with a little boy, a rolativo as I supposed, as ho was also at thocoaBt with tier. I watch ed for her and as it was my only clianco I mado the attack, aB I wished to leave thu city that night, owing to my stupid blunder I wished to remain to see how my victim fared. I am happy to learn sho ts not seriously hurt. Hy tho tinio tills readies youromco i will bo far from Salem. 1 UBcd ono ounce of chloroform. As to who tho aBsaibtnt really was !b vet to bo disclosed. Tun Jouiinai has been attempting to learn tho identity of the man over bIuco tho remarkable affair and to learn a reaeon for tho criminal assault on an inoffensivo and defenseless woman, who was knocked down, gagged and chloroformed in this city on hor way homo from church. Tho improssion was first glvon that Mrs. Strong's IniBband was the perpe trator of tho deed, It appearing that no possible motive could be assigned else whore. This couplo havo boon separated for about a year, since which time Mr. Strong bus been in Oklahoma, or such was tlio statement made in a letter re ceived from him by Mrs. Strong. Tho morning after thu assault was mado on Mrs. Strong, sho received Information to that effect in a letter written by Mr. Strong from Hoppncr, Or., and in it lie stated that ho would loave that place soon, to get a band of sheep. This might account for his nb senco from that olty on tho day ho was said to have been ecen hero. Chief ol Polico Gibbon immediately wroto to the city marshal at Iloppuerto learn whether or not Mr. Strong nob in Hoppncr on Octobnr Kith, but lias received no reply. Mrs. Strong has also written to li.tr bus band to clear hinuelf from suspicion if possible, by sending an aflidavii an to his presence there. A mlHtake was made by several re garding the identity of Fred Strong, his band of the Mrs. Strong who was attack od. Ho is by trade a printer, but often did other work, and was employed at the Allen Cannery a year ago hist Hum mer fur several months, both at day and night work. llo was contused with aunthor Fred Strong, u gambler, from Forest Grove, who formerly was in Salem occasionally. If Mr, Strong can piovo an alibi, there is ono other man known who may bo connected with tho affair, and if thu letter given ubovo is not a "fake" ho may bo tho author of that statement. On last Saturday afternoon a young man apparently about 21 years of ugo, called at Mrs. Strong's residence and seemingly was not thoroughly fa miliar with tho place as ho inquired whether or not Mrs. Strong lived there. On receiving an alllriuatlvo answer hu inquired as to her health, and then ox pressed his sympathy and great regret thai tho accident had ever happened to her. As booh as hu left Mrs. Sorong tried toreiuomberwhoho was, but could not do so, and decided that ho was a perfect stranger to hor, and that she hud never before peon him. Her description of him tallies exactly that of a man who waB seen in that vicinity several time thu past week. D. E.
