Williamson, Dr. J. R. Cardwell and Others. lloport of Ncwborg Graphic. Beginning with last Friday evening tho annual mid summer mooting of the Oregon Stato Horticultural Society waa hold in Newberg and was attended by many representative horticulturists, tho most progressive and enorgetic class of agriculturists in tho state. Excellent and inspiring addresses vtero delivered throughout tho various BOBslons and tho discussions woro encouragingly general, at times becoming ontortainingly warm. In fact, the prcsonco of such men as Dr J. R. Cardwell ot Portland, tho Nestor of Oregon horticulture, Hon, E. L. Smith of Hood River, irroprcsBibly ex- uborant, Editor II. M. Williamson of Portiauil, Hon. E. Hofer of Salem, Prof. E. R. Lake and many more whowero horo would issue a successful meeting under almost nny circumstances. It is to bo regretted only that tho meeting was hold at such a busy season of the year that not a very largo number of tho local fruit growers could attend, and bo benofltcd thereby. Newberg has always boon very much favored in buitiz chosen as tho mooting placo for such worthy organizations, und tho fact la a morited recognition i u fa vor of our town and vicinity, In lino with tills thought, it was a gonorouu tributo paid us by Dr. Cardwoll tho prosidout of tho society, when in lita address he said, "This, our third Bum mer meeting at Newberg, attosls our ap preciation of your clllciont service in horticulture. It affords us pleasure to note thoovidencoof substantial progress in town and country. You havo obtained an enviable emineuco in horticultural methods. Nowhoro do llnor fruits grow, nor reach tho markot in tastier pack ages. Tho Newberg brand brings tho highest prices in tho homo and foreign markets. Your location is well chosen, and you grow all tho fruits o( the tem perate 7ono to tho greatest porfection, as evidenced at tho World's Fair at Chicago, at Omaha und now at Buffalo." TJie spirit of tho address und dlssiona throughout eeomed remarkably hopeful. At tho first session hold Friday evon ing, Prof. J, 0. Hodson gavo a hearty, and nt tho same timo a thoughtful ad dress of welcome on behalf of tho citi zens of Newberg. Ho welcomed the visitors as mon who aro thinking, know ing and doing, and who in a meeting of this naturo, always give to their hoarers inoro than they tako away. This is pri marily an ago of diffusion of ideas. Man lives, not to himself nlono, hut ns lie receives ho also givej. Ideas and tnoth odi aro wortii but ltttlo until they nro diffusod and put into practice, and thoso conferences of fruitgrowora conduco to tho necessary interchange of idoas. Tho great demand now is for tho best products, and, wlillo competition is drawing tho lines closor all tho while, tho man who is not keeping stop with now conditions is left behind. Finally theso meetings help bring to tho fruit grower four requisites for his success faith, enthusinBin, judgement and knowledge. Tito roBponso was given by Dr. Cald well, who aftor replying appropriately to tho cordial welcome received, gavo a review of tin work of tho society since its organization thirteen years ago. Han. E. I,, Smith of Hood Rlver.pro sident of tho slate board of horticulture, gavo a ringing address winch was enthusiastically received. Ho haa a dash and onergy which is contagious and which carries tieouse of conviction to his hearers. Speaking ot organization, Mr. Smith said it is a matter ot necessity that fruit growers associate theniBoIvos closely tugether to obtain satisfactory rosults. Editor E, Hofer on the Strawberry. There aro addresses and thon thore aro addresses, but it was tho real thing In this lino with which Hon. E. Hofer of tho Bulom Capital Journal favored tho horticultural socioty Saturday afternoon. Tho poet spoake of finding sormons In trees and running brooks etc, but Mr. Ilofor found his in tlio strawberry. His diecoureo was full of forvor and on. thuslasm, but orthodox, and carried conviction to tho hearts of his hearers. Tho speaker said that for years he had blowed in all his spare chango on straw berries and as a rule hod recoived no chango In return, but yot declared ho was an enthusiast over tho little fruit, and bellevod thoroughly in it. Ho pro ceeded to paint 0 bsautllul picture of the possibilities of strawberry culture In Wostorn Oregon, declaring that tho Wlllametto Valloy borry is destined to take tho markets of tho world. Thero is a gold mine in the business if tho people will only dovolop ho prospect, fho necessity was emphasized of epo cialization, or tho growing of different berries for different puipoeoa and mar ke's; of pationt concentration upon tho principles of thobtiBluess-of the grower raising his own plants, studying thoir adaptability to tho soil ; of getting one or two good varieties and staying witli them ; of marketing only tiio best fruit, and of co-operating in the business with fellow growers. As good varieties Mr. Hofer recommended the Idoal, Lloyds, Kansas, i)u Mnurier, Marguerite, Down Ing'a Prido, Duvorly, Sunahlno, Sample, and Double Cropper. Tho need of pushing tho strawberry canning industry was imprcspoJ, as one of tho most valuable industrial enter prises to all classes of people Ho recommended that tho people In this part of tho state graft .tho Hood River spirit of enterprise and go in to win, "Willamette Valley is tho strawberry paiadiso of the world and we are fools not to enter therein." In closing Mr. Holar bocamo impassioned and the sparks of inspiration caught Are witli an answering glow from his audionco as ho closod witli tho werds: "The strawberry patch is the connecting link between town and country, between city and surburbau homes, tho golden road to industrial emancipation for tho white faced inhabitants of runted houses, giv ing employment to tho largest numbers In field and factory helping tho multi tude to got and to keep tho most sacred and beautiful thing in tho world a well furnished American home supported by honest health-giving industry by old and young " Status of Horticulture in Oregon." II, M. Williamson, oditor of the Ore gon Agriculturist and Rural Northwest, and who has ever been one of tho wheel horses in the promotion of the beat in terests of Oregon lurtlculture, gave a popular and Inspiring address upon tho subject as given above I Hi tho belief of Editor Williamson that the status of horticultural condi tions is bettor now than ovor before. Tho booms have given way to steady and healthful development. Tho Oregon apple again enjoys supromacy, and the prune buiinoss 1b resolving Itself upon a stronger basis. Markets aro oxpiudlug and the future is bright. The cherry is being developed to perfection ; Southern Oregon psaches bring the best prices everywhere and Oregon strawberries are making a well-earned reputation. The nursery has become one of the greatest industries in the state, and tho canning bustne8B,which wout out with -tho boom, is returning steadily. The greatest part of the agricultural investments of the state Is devoted to fruitgrowing. Where there was disappointment, there Is now renewed hope, In closing, Mr William son paid Newberg with her varied and rich agricultural resources, a glowing tribute, u having devolopud from the "grubby end" to tho choico garden spot of old Yamhill . Prof. II LUalley of Cornell University, who hs been doing work this summer in the state university of California, and who has been secured by Prof. Lake forono day' work In Orrgon on his return homeward, gavo the last address of the meeting. Prof. Bailey talked upon the subject of the Nature Study" and tho move ment for Us furtherance which has started In New York uodor the auiptces of Cornell University. He holds that the movement la now in North America, in that it aims to reach out to all people, and is not Intended primarily for teach ers, as was tbe Aganiz plan Its purpose is to aid people to live better and to enjoy more; to help flr early In life a corrtct point of view; to enable young rple to have the power of hsppineu themselves; to teach that there is something interesting in everything that Is; f develop the power of obtervatlou; to arrest among the young peojnO the distaite for the farm. - TODAY'S MARKET.
