COUNTY JAIL
Losing His Mind as a Result
of Lene: Confinement and
Great Trouble.
A. T. Xumwalt is gradually losing Ills
mind. Ho has been incarcornlcd in tho
county jail for tho past four months,
and is apparently the victim of advereo
circumstances, lie was arrested in
March, of this year, on tho chargo of
threatening to do his wifo bodily harm.
At tho preliminary examination ho was
bound over to appear before tho grand
jury. At a previous examination on
almost tho same charge, tho case was
dismissed. Ball was furnished by Tur
ner men, who after three weeks with
drew their bond and he was tikon to
jail. This position undoubtedly causes
great unrest of mind, ty bo in jail on the
clmrgoof attempting to injr.ro his wifo
and with no friends to furnifh his bail
Yet It is thought by his physician
and tho jailer that his greatest trouble
is tho fact that ho is sub
picloned of tho murder of Jan.
Lyons, who was killed by an unknown
party about 2 years ago, while sitting In
his storo at Lyons, tho shot being II red
thiough tho window.
Theso two matters combined havo
caused him such mental anguish that
his mind has almost failed. Ho is ho
weak that at times ho falls down whi'e
walking the floor and ho has often told
his follow prisoner (hat ho will kill him
sclf, that his lifo is iv miserable failure,-
etc. Yesterday ho asked that his wifo
bo telegraphed to scud him photographs
of herself and children, as ho wished to
sc them once more and Lad not long to
live. Tlioy are at Ashland nt present.
Sheriff Durbin Is of . tho opinion that
unless relict 1 obtained very soon it will
bo necessary to havo him examined for
insanity. Ho is certainly in very bad
condition, nnd should havo early atten
tion. Tho reason ho Is being so long do
talned In jail !b duo to the fact that tho
jury before which lie was tried at the
Juno term of court failed to
ajjree, but tho panel had been discharg
ed by Judge lluriott heforo tho jury in
the .umwalt camo in with its disagree
ment, honco tho court sot tho new trial
for tho October term. This dolay and
consequent confinement has been most
eovoro on the prlsono', and it is to bo
hopod that he may bo nffordod relief
before his health is entirely ruined and

Gold Bars
San Francisco Aug. 7. A. J. Ralston,
of theSelby Smelting Company works,
stated this morning that he had heard
milling of a definite nature from the
h ads ol the detective agencloB having
men at work on tho robbery case.
Ralston, stated that a reward of 5,000
ban been offered for the capture of tho
men.

a representative of tho Associated Press
rogarding tho rebbery:
"The robbers must havo succeeded in
entering tho vault some timo between
tho hours of midnight and 5 o'clock this
morning. Thoy got in through a hole
about the sizo of a manhole in a boilor,
and tho indications are that tho robbers
had been working on the scheme for
some timo. Over 150 holes wore bored
in tho bottom of tho vault, and tho
workmanship shows that mechanics of
more than usual ability superintended
tho job. Tho holes wore bored to within
a hair's breadth of tho surface, and
when tho proper timo camo the plato
was forced up, thus giving tho robbers
access to tho treasure.
Tho plotters first excavated a nolo
alongside the bullJing, dirpctly in line
with (lie vault. Tho work of excavating
mnst havo takon some timo, and at tho
oid of each night's work acover of aths,
rubber sheeting, and sacks waB mado.tho
whole being concealed with a lavor of
dirt. What became of tho excavated
dirt we have been unable to find. It
must havo been removed In sacks. The
covering was fnot strong enough to hold
a man, but the digging was done so closo
to tho building that thu men never
walked over it. Wo aro satisfied that
tho plotters were aided by some one
thoroughly familiar with thosystom em
ployed at tho works, and ouo fully in
formed as to the construction of the
vutilt.
"Last night ono of tho watchmen em
ployed about tho premises heard noises
iusido tho vault and informed his fellows
that tho dovil or ghosts wore insido tho
vault. Thoy laughod at him and made
no investigation, and thus tho robbers
wero left unmolosted at thoir work.
"Insido tho vault were several sacks
containing $100,000, but thoso wero not
touched. It may havo bon that tho
men becamo alarmed. They also left
two bars of great valuo on tho beach in
thoir haste to embark.
"It is impossible for us to say at this
time what way tho men went. If they
used a steam launch to leave tho scone
of tho robbery thoy could have gono in
any direction, but if they escaped in a
rowboat thoy would doubtless have
taken thu di rod Ion in which tho tide
was running,

The thieves had takon the precaution
of fastunlint the door of tho vault from
the iiiBido, so that it would lu dllllcult
to open from tho outsldo in case thoy
wero interrupted iu their work.
Tiio robbers also sprinkled red pepper
in tho tunnel to make things as uncom
fortable as possiblo for anyone who
might attempt to pursue them.
Ralston stated that his Company,
would be responsible for overy cent of
tho stolen bullion, and that aeettlo
inont witli the consignees would bo'
made as soon as tho affairs of tho Com
pany could bo adjusted.. The Company
is rated by commercial agencies as one
of the strongest on the coast.

Pulaskii, N. Y., formerly Quartermaster
on the steamship Meteor, has arrived

has about 1000 feet of development

group. It is the avowed purpose of the
