Salem's Business Interests Re quire it, ------ Much indignation and disgust is be ing expressed by all classes of citizens ofer tho results of the recent so-called census of Salem, aa well as other towno ofjjur stalo. In 1890 our city had about 10,000 with In the four wards of tho city, and it la a fact that nono wjll attempt to gaiueny that wo now have fully as many If not more people than wo had at that lime. There are now moio buildings with in tho oily limits, and it is next to im possible to find a vacant house. No well informed citixeii who is at all obaorvliiu but must admit that our city is greatly wronged by the so-culled ceuaua recently foisted upon us by a sutof politiulau enumerator:), for we now have more people than ten years ago, In-yond any question. It would not Ik) right to say Hint nil tho enumerators fulled in their duty, but tho simple fact that Hupt. Winn was constantly appealing to tlio newspapers and private clMxons to anal-it in taking thu census, ta of itself evidence that tho work was deficient. Tho census depart ment had no confidence in its own work, and why should it not bo subject to criticism? Tho fact that our imputation has been cut down about one-half on paer ( but not in facU is tho plainest evidence to any thinking person that the thing ia a fraud, or all previous enumerations wero frauds. This cutting dawn, which is tho same procoss that has been applied to allothor growing towns in tho stato, will prove a great dotriment to our city, and should bo corrected. In tho first place It will cOBt Salem several letter carriers, and will in a number of other ways injure our city and its standing abroad. How can this bo remedied? Tho city could easily tako ' a census, at small expense, and with such prouf of tho inefllcioncy of the ofllcial coubuh, could go before the department uud got a hearing that would proovo fruit ful. Such a census could at least bo used to maintain our interests boforo tho pos tal department. One man has volun teered to take tho first ward census freo of chaigo, and no doubt others could bo found willing tovolunteor their services. A meeting of citizons should be called to tako this matter in hand, or to confer with the city council for action that would sot tho capital city of Oregon right boforo the world, TWO ENTERPRISES ARE INCORPORATED TWENTIETH CENTURY TO BE CELEBRATED I'our moiiUifl nt tho Strand Theatre, London, 3 monUiB at Madison h'quaro Theatre, New York.
