V4 THE KING WAS BETTER. an 1 1 1 i i i Dot the Doctor Clot tittle Credit Kor Ilia BfTorta. A story Illustrating the good senso and humor of tho late King Humbert Is told nt the expense of his physician, Dr. Sagtlone. Sotnctlmea the king, from his bunting lodgo of Castle Pu tin no went to the sea and amused him self by shoveling sand Into a cart. "Take care, your majesty," said Bagll- ono ono tiay, "not to perspire too much." "Ah, my dear 8lguor Doctor," answered the king, resting his chin on hlfl two hands thnt grasped the handle ot his spade, "this muscular ex crclso docs mo much moro good tluin your prescriptions." "1'cs, but one must abuse nothing." "But I tell you that I fcol vory well, nud you arc afraid you sco In this poor shovel n competitor." And, laughing heartily, tho king finished filling his cart However, by exposing himself In every way without exercising any core, tho king contracted bronchitis, which took a chronic form and gave him n rather troublesome cough. This cough was a source of anxiety to the faith ful doctor, as he could not convince his patient of the necessity for taking med icine. Occasionally the doctor was even sent nwny abruptly by the king, who would say, "I havo not called you Why did you come? You mny go. I thank you very much." One evening, however, the doctor thought ho had gained his point, nnd he prepared for the king la bl& bedroom the powders he was to tnko during the night. I will not discourse on tho subject of bilge water, as Inexperience thereof might make the explanation weari oihe. Any one nenun luted with the bllgoi water question, knows It Is. of en grossing Interest. Bilge Is a prluce among smells, nud If you have ever fallen tinder Its power you will njways think that every terrific thing In smells Is a manifestation, of bilge water. I remember on ouc occasion when on board a moored hulk, not a hospital ship, smelling In the evening some thing thnt called for mention, so I mentioned It. "Oh," said my com pnulons, more under the swny of bilge water than I was, from their greater knowledge of Its power, "ltB only our bilge water." In tho morning we found It was tho rotting carcass of an ele phant that had floated down tho river and now hung lu tho mooring chain. After a considerable time was spent In getting rid of tho carcass I said, "For goodneos' snke, gentlemen, stir up your bilge water, and lot tho smells tight It out together while we go ashore, for n spell." "No," Bald my companions, terror stricken nt the sug gestion. "You do not know our bilge water when Its back'B up. It would Btrqtch you If you were half way across Africa. This clophnnt Is mere lavender water to It" This was a moro dreadful bilge water than a hospital ship would havo. Still, though bnd, bilge water Is not neces sarily fatal under proper management.
