IN THE WORLD OF LITERATURE New Volume ty Jaa. VYhitcorab Riley -Sam lloustaa Woman la Central Afrtca Russell Catalotue. A New Volume by Riley. Just in time for tho holidays and after four years of silence, broken only by an occasional poem in a magazine, James Wliitcomb Riley has published another book of verso. It takes its title from tho first poem in it, "Home Folks." Published by Bowen, Merrill & Co,, Indianapolis. It Is nearly SO yoars since Jamee Wliitcomb Riley first began to write the vorso which so many persons have learned to love. It was not nntil after tho appearance of tho now famous "Leonainte" hoax, which appeared In the Kokomo Dispatch, and which ex cited much comment and criticism of various kinds, that the young author summoned up courogo enough to gather togethor what he considered tho best of his product, with tho Intention of Issu ing a book and that in his nativo Iloosior dialect. Ho called this, his first prctontious effort, "Tho Old Swlmmlu Hole and 'Loven Moro Poems," and in 1888 it was published by tho Robert Clarke Company, of Cincinnati, under tho pen name of Benjamin F. Johnson, of Boone, 1,000 copies, at tho author's exponso. fiinco that timo what strides have becnroade I A remarkable quality of this now book by Mr. Riley is the diversity of its contents. Tho poems hero collected run "from grave to gay, from lively to so voro." In "Mister Hop-Toad," with Its catchy refrain: Oh, oh, oh I I grabs up my old hoe; But I sees you, Amis' I, "Oooh-oohl Howdy, Mister Hop-Toad I How-deo do!" The poet reverts to ills favorite dia lect, the everyday speech ol tho Jllooslor countryman, which ho has done so much to make familiar to tho world. It will doubtless, bo marked, however, that not a largo proportion of this book Is in dia lect, that is to say Iloosior dialect. Riley is a poet of tho plain people. Furthermore eho wishes the world to know that the people of the interior, who are uniformly spoken of as savages, were uniformly kind and attentive to her, a lady travelling absolntoly alone with them. She describes tho fashions, dress, hotifoe, liing and customs of the people. Sho finds them a happy and contented race except where they have been disturbed by the vices and innova tions of civilization. The author makes earnest appeals for fair treatmentfor the preservation of animal life in the dark continent. Her book is readable in every pogo and every line, not alone for hnr ability to chroniole her travels, for tho sound judgment of public matters, but for its literary merit. Her name is worthy to rauked with writers and trav elers like Stanley and Livingston "if she is a woman." It la beautifully printed and well bound, and worthy of a place in every library.
