Rev. Herbert B. Blgelow, of the Vine
Street Congregational Church, preached

hia return from a lecturing tour through
the Western States and tho Pacific slope.
"Lead Ua Not Into Temptation" was hia
text. Ho concluded with practical ap
plications to tho industrial and govern
mental problems before tho country to
day. "That prayor," said ho, "comes to
you and to mo from tho coal miners of
Pennsylvania. How would you liko to
support a family on 70 centa a day? That
is the average wages of tho minor. And
probably, that is eo in this land of
plenty, wherever men work at simple
manual labor fG a week for the men who
carry tho heaviest burdona! Ab eomo

necessities what is left from the miner's
earnings would not pay for tho board of

fault then I suppose there would be
nothing to do but taurgo tho miners to

work of churches which nro trying to
help these men to livo liko men in tho
condition of beasts. But wo know that
a monopoly of tho railroads and a
monopoly of tho mines drovo tbeso men
to theso conditions. Wo cry out to tho
waking conscloncoof tho nation, demand
ing that theso monopolies bo owned by
the peoplo for tho common good. Wo do
it, not that men may havo full din
nerpails, but becaueo they are men. Be
cause it is their right to enjoy the good
of all their labor.
Social Justice Demanded,

After putting tho samo prayer into
the month of a City Councilman, Mr.
Blgelow contended that the average
mau in polities was as good as tho av
erage man In other pursuits, but hia
career waa exposed to more temptations.
It Is onr duty to take those temptations
away by changing our political system.
Thecltirens of our cities nro dlrecly re
sponsible for much of tho municipal
corruption, first, becauso they retain an
unscientific systom of voting, whereby
unknown men aro ablo to slip into of
fice, and in tho second place, whero
City Conncllmen havo beon unwisely
chosen, they are intrusted with power
that should bo exercised directly by
the-peoplo. He stated on good author
ity, that when John P. Altgold waa gov
ernor of Illinois he was offered n bribe
of a cool million to sign tho "oternal
monopolist" bill. He resisted tho temp
tation, and camo out of office unsullied.
But wc havo no right to subject our
public eervants to such temptaion.
Amend tho laws so that politicians can
not have tho final word in theso con
cerns. Let them be referred to n voto
of the people.
