STAYTON BRIDGE Marion County Pays Half of Price AGREED ON FOR STAYTON BRIDGE A New Order About Delinquent TaxesNo Particular Time lUs Deen Set for a Penalty to Apply. The court formnlly nccoptcd tho work on tho Stayton bridgo and ordered a warrant issued to J. It. Tillotson, the contractor for tho $1810.50 one half of his bill, tho other half to bo paid by Linn county. It will bo remembered that tho con tract for repairing tho I rl Igo was let by tho county courts of Marlon and Linn counties acting together on August 30, to J. II. Tillotson for $3011), his being tho lowest of four bids ranging up to $5100. Tim contract va. for tho rotlmboring of thubrldgccxcoptlng the needlebenms, which were put in last year. It scout?, however, that this exception wiiB some- how made to apply to 10 other pieces of timber which needed renewal and $50 extra was allowed for that. Thero has been some Inquiry as to why tho repair of the bridge ehould cost fo much more now than when, under Juilgu Terrell's administration, bids wero re ceived as low as about $2200. Judgo Scott'H explanation Is that the former h'ds did not include the plunking of tho bridgo ;also that owing to the lateness in season, tho contractor took chances on a rise of the river washing out tho false work aud letting tho strttcturo fall. Nothing hat been dono for tho protection of tho north end of tho bridgo which tho river threatens to washout nt tho first high freshet, tho Linn county court being unwilling to spout! any money for that purpose About the Delinquent Taxes. Uoforo adjournment Friday tho Ma rlon county commissioners court rescind ed its order of recent date declaring taxes delinquent after Saturday Oct. lGth. Asa seems nature some , matter of fact this onler to havo been in the of a hurry-up "oRIer" "id of tho backward taxpayers rather than a furious piece of lawful county business. Tho luw fixes tho time for taxes to becomo delinquent, on April 1. As tho assessment roll doos not reach tho sheriff's hands until after that date, it lias boon impossible to comply with tho terms of tho law in all respects. Tho sheriff is still collecting taxes without penalty, but before tho noxt meeting of tho county commisMon er's court, tho books will bo closed and placed in tllo hands of tho county clerk, who will prepare tho delinquent tax roll, and tho court will then issue a warrant to tho sheriff to sell tho prop erty to collect tho tax, following the course prescribed by law.
