OF f HE CLANS First Republican Rally At the Armory Tlffloa Ford Entertains a Cool Sited Gather lot and Everything Passes Off Pleasantly. The grand Republican rally advertised for Saturday night was pulled off ac cording to program, and it may bo safe ly said that it was the modt success ful rally of the compalgnas It was the first. Promptly at 7:43 p. m. the Reform eobool band struck up a lively Air in front of the Hotel Willamette and short ly thereafter led the way, followed by a procession loss than ten blocks in length to the city hall. Tho Armory hall was comfortably filled. Tho five hundred chairs were nearly all occupied, and there were prob ably enough people standing up near the door to fill tlio empty ohairs which wero scattered through tho room. Tho audlenco was alxmt equally di vided between tho two sexes, and thoro were quite a number of Democrats and Populists who wanted to hear what old Til had to say. On the platform wero seated Super intendent Leo and Book-keeper Race, of the Stato Penitentiary, Superintend ent Calbreath, of tho Stato Insane asy lum, State School Superintendent Ack erman, W. II. Odell, ex -clerk of tho State School Land Hoard, Dr. Cusick, physclan for stato institutions, Geo. P. Litclificd, who wouldn't mind being superintendent of something, and others. Presently tho orator of tho evening, Tilmon Ford, camo in, with Gover nor Geer and mounted tho platform, and then it was seen that tho Jouknal'h report that Til had beau scon wearing a white shirt In Eurdpo had not been as incrediblo as it seemed, ilo not only had on a bilcd shirt but a Btaud Ing collar and a nccktlo. To bo sure, it was not a high collar, nor a tight one, but it was n standing collar just tho same. Governor Geer acted as master of cor omonlesf and opened tho festivities with a few remarks in his character istic vein. A eong by a quartotto composed of Kpley, Wongor, Snyder nnd Judd, was really flnu and they wore encored. Tho "Uoosovolt March," composed by Clifford Kantner, was playod on tho piano by Miss filma Vuller iiud was generously applauded. At lust, a few minutes before nluu o'clock, and after most of the people had boon In their teats an hour and a half, orator of tho evening Mas introduced by Governor Geer. Ho spoko for a little over an hour and entertained IiIh hearers in good shape. Ho devoted his remarks mostly to tho Ibhuo of imporialiHin, and while ho neither defined nor directly defended tho Republican policy, ho indirectly do fended it by endeavoring to show that it is identical with that of Jefferson, Jack sou and other fathers of tlio Democracy, Ho said no ono waH in favor of im perialism, and assorted thatcongross ha? instructed tho presidontto do every thing that holms done. Ho characterised as "tomfoolery" tho Idea of "consent of tho governed," In territory purchased of other nations. Ho said, ''Take Again uldo out of tho Philippines and quiet would bo restored In a very short time." Ills assertion that "wo are going to hold them Philippines," nroiiBod k'Sd ap plause than ono would expect. Ho said that the constitution was in tended for tho original 13 states and no moro,aud only extended over our posses sions by action of congress. lie quoted the Revised Statutes of 1S01 to show tho three dlvisIons--"stute8, territories, and countries over whiuh tlio United States exorcises sovereignty and jurisdiction," Ho devoted a little time to the trusts, claiming that tho Democrats are n' deep in tho mud as tho Republicans are in tho inlro, and ox pressing a preference for building up trneta in this country rather than in some other. Ho said tho silver trust was tho biggest trust of all, and all thoro was to free coinage was an attompt to double tho value of tho silver mine product and stocks, Ho touched tho tariff, and tackled tho Nicaragua canal with unflinching courage. Ho clulmod that until the Hay-Pauucefoto treaty was mado it was Impossible for this country to build tho c.vual, as tho Clayton Uulwor treaty prevented, and tho abrogation ot tho former now would leavo us tied up by the latter and unable to build tho canal without Kngluud's co operation. Rut it Ib easier to commend Mr. Ford's siKieoli for what ho left out than for what ho put in. Thoro was no bitter, noss, no abuse, no reference to tho "rag tag and bobtail." Ho mado his urgu ments like a fellow-eltlxon and a gentle man, talking to his friends. There was no abuse of Mr. IJryan and no sickening eulogy of Mr. MoKiuloy, The crowd listened with tho closest at toution. There was no considerable applaiise.but none of tho wild, spontane ous sort. Several persons had tin horns but did not wear them out. Thoro was no cheering otter tho meeting was over, but tho people got up and Hied out in a sub dued and decorous fashion. A bench warrant was issued and the accused was placed under ar rest by Deputy Sheriff Colbath. Two criminal cases were disposed of as indicated belew: Stato of Oregon vs O. P.
