Describes the Slf bti la EoflinJ, st the Paris Exposition and on the Continent. Tub Haode, July 31st, 1000. Jiut had a note from Papa, inclosing your letter. Papa says it is still awfully hot in Paris, and that I was wiso to stay whero it is cool. I had to wear my jack et all day today, you know this is so near the coast. I want to tell you of my good fortuno no, not good fortune, but Providence. You know 1 was so disappointed not to go into the Dutch houses hero in the country, well this morning I went out on my wheel followed a canal into the country, taking a few photos and looking for something tv sketch this afternoon. I found a lino old wind-mill, put my camera on tho tripod, and in moving around in tho deep grass ind weeds I almost stumbled over n yonng man who was painting in oils. Ho spoko to me In Dutch and I answered in English. Then ho said: "Oh, You aro English, aro you?" and wo proceeded toconverso in English. As usual thero woro n dozen chlldron following mo, and tho boys were bound to bo in the picture, right in front of tho lens. I could do nothing with thorn, but ho made them stand around, and posed a llttlo girl for me. He is n very nlco young man, a Christian, and Interested in tho Y. M. C. A. work, too,so when ho offered to go with mo on a wheel to his country relatives to sketch and photo graph tho interior of their houses I did not hesitato to accept ids offer, and ho seemed so pleased to bo able to bIiow mo Holland. I'll novor corao hero again without learning n llttlo Dutch, or Holland, rather ; they don't call it Dutch, Yesterday tho ''Great Market" was held, and I got on my wheel about four o'clock and wandered down tiiero. I did not cxicct to see much;but what was my surpriso to see thrco or four long blocks of tent booths, with everything you could Imagine for sale ; clothing, Dowers, pottery, stoves, fish, regular juuk shops, fruit, hotcakes and bread, bIioos, hats, candy, etc. etc. Of courso you can guess which ones drew me like powerful maguots tho junk shops and oh, what a temptation It was to buy tho things I could not carry homo. I don't covet tho boau- tlful jewels I eco, but I'm afraid I do tho copper and brass. Tho peoplo hero hato tho English and write books against them and sell them right hero. Thursday is tho queen's mother's birthday. Tlioy aro making great prep arations for a celebration. August C It has been very stormy for two days. Yesterday I sat in the dining room window an J sketched tho street. Thorowero two beautiful Hol land Hags floating in the breeze, loft from tho decorations of tho day boforo. Thursday we went out to eomo old houses belonging to tho servants of a frlond of Mr. Vanderhoop, ami because it was n holiday they had go no to tho city, so wo could not get In. I was so disappointed. Mr. Vanderhoop thinks that wo Americans aro so reckless, and when I would rldo my wheel within six feet of tho canal lie was euro I would fall in I And when I carried an um brella on my wheel lie fairly held his breath, and then oxclaimed: "My wohdl butyoualiclovah!" That Bounds just llko an Englishman, doesn't it? I expect to luivo hore early Monday morning, so that I may reach Hotter dam by 8 a. m and Paris that night. I received a telegram from papa on Thurs day, saying that ho hod left for Ger many to get away from tho heat of Paris, I havo been almost too cold all day, and had to sit with my jackot on part of tho time. It has been so pleas ant hero, and I havo boon feeling so well all the the time, but I fear that Paris will take away all of iny ambition. I am more than ready to go homo. I must tell you about my narrow es cape. 1 tliougut I would go around tlio cornor, about two of our blocks away, to get eomo fruit, as I could buy live times as much for tho money as 1 1 tho hotel, so I rotlo my wheel to avoid wot feet as my rubbers aro In Ilottendam, and had to carry an umbrella, as it was rain ing quite hard. I got thero all right and was just starting back when Iliad tho narrowest escae of my life. A man was walking directly in front of my wheol, crosswise, and tho wind was blowing so ho couldn't hear my bell. Ho rlpally heard Just In time to keep mo from striking him, ami by that tlmo I was on tho street car track, and looked up to boo a heavy wa;on and horeo com ing toward mo at a very fast gait and al most uon me, I hesitated half a second as to which way I should turn and thr It was too late, for tho horse's head was over my handle bars, still coming, with his head drawn back to keep from strik ing me. Oh ! but ho looked like a mon ster, I thought of a thousand things In that instant, and then jumped, wheol and all, onto tho narrow two and one half foot sidewalk without a hundreth part of a second to spare, and then I thought my foot would bo run over. 1 landed on tho spoke of my wheel and I tell you I was thankful for that escape. Tho horse w as going too fast to stop.and ho would have trampled mo to death. The driver did not even etop, and the men who came to my help jabbered away and looked daggers at him. My handle bars were twisted, but tho wheel was uninjured. You know "prldu al ways goes before a fall," and the lady who sold the fruit came to Beo the "won der'' mount with an umbrella in her hand, and sho looked bo admiringly at me when I mounted easily, that I was quite pleased with myself, hence de served my fall. 11 1 M.V I -ttiiitmmHmfmlmm MMHMVWMMMM- A JWeak Stomach is the causo of all disease.
