Describes the Sights In Eniland, at the Paris Exposition and on the Continent. KorrKitDAM, Holland, 5 p. in., July 21. I have been a week without mail, nod It will bo another week boforo I reach 1'nrls, where I hope to hear from you, Well, Holland far surpasses my fondest dreams so far, and wo havo only seen n very llttlo of it hut thocanals and boats and largo windmills aro up to my expect ations, and there are n great many more of them than 1 thought. Wo left London at 8:30 last evening, rode on tho train for about two hours an awful crowd then tooka largo steam er which could not begin to furnish stooping accomodations for all. I was pretty blue with tho thought of sitting on deck all night, for, with nil my wraps on, I was chilled through. Hut a bright thought came to mo aud I went to the stewardess and asked hor if alio couldn't possibly find mo n plnco to lio down, nt tho same tlmo holding out in my hand a silver picco. "Money talks," over here, especially, and I had a real comfortablo loungo. Papa went and did likewise, so wo both got somn sleep, but wo had to got up about four o'clock and did notget to bed till 12, so wo have been sleeping this afternoon. Wo aro in luck to havo our wheels here, (but mine has cost mo a small fortuno already). There are no cabs or busses that 1 havo Been, and only ono street car, but tho roads aro splendid and no hills. Tho Hague is only 14 miles from here, nnd wo expect to go thero tomorrow on our wheels wo will tako a rido this ev ening, too. Papa reached London Friday night, and all day Saturday wo wero togother down town and in tho afternoon we took a ride down tho Thames to Greonwich and how I did enjoy it. Wo took a good many snap shots reached home just in time for Biipper nnd then went to tho opera to hear Molba, in "Borneo and Juliet," nt CO cents per head. How Is that? Wo heard Edounrd Do Reside! (forget how to spell it), too. Oh, it was flno I But wo suffered with tho heat. It is very warm today, and I am melting away Just now. Wo nro nt tho Victoria Hotel, which is right on tho bank of the Mnas river, nnd a canal nt tho side bo wo can Bit nnd Bee hundreds nnd thous ands of boats go by ; I novor saw so many before In all my life. Haiii.km, July 20. Wo have beon "on tho go" constantly. Cutno hero from Kotteidnm yesterday morning. Went to Amsterdam bytrain yesterday noon and roturned in tho evening. I would love to stay hero a mouth if you and bnby wero only hero. We go to the Haguo today. Tub Haouk, Saturday, July 23. I Anally porsuaded papa to go on to Paris nnd leave mo hero, nnd if I had my choice I would only bo in Paris throe or four days nnd spend all the timo hero. It Is simply charming. Papn and I wont on our wheels yesterday morning to the coast, about three mllos out Jovor a lino shady road ; and today I went nlono and mado a sketch of an old fishing boat up on tho beach. It is so interesting there, with the people In their Dutch coat u 11103 and the llahlng boats coming and going. rhls morning as I was sketching I had about 20 Dutch children all around mo, and I had a fine time. I would tell them tho names of things in Kngllsh ami they would tell me what they wero In Dutch. Unless wo explain that wo nro Ameri cans nnd not Kngllsh they make fun of us. ostordtiy the children followed me, pointing their lingers at me and hooting, until I said in a very vigorous manner: "Not Kngllsh, not Kngllsh; Ainoricunl" Thou thoy wero very much interested and could not know enough about me. They ull think I ntn rich (because I huvon line looking cam era and n watch, I guess) aud thoy con tinually beg for inoiiey. I made them understand this morning that tho chit dreu don't do that iu America. I told them to slug for me, nnd thero was such a din that I had to stop painting to Inugh, When 1 tlulshod my sketch I held it up for thoui to see nnd they wero very appreciative aud shouted and yelled as if I had paid thorn for it. Yes torday I bought the cutest pair of baby's wooden shoes you could Imagine. I saw them sitting on a sand heap, where tho children had put thorn while they wero playing, and I never saw any. thing bo cunning In my life. I began to bargain for them right away, offering 35 ol their cents, 14 cents In our money, which Is more than a new pair would con. Tho little girl who had tho baby in charge did not want to let me have them because her mother was not nt homo to ask, but tho other children Just mado her do it because they knew It was a bargalu. I want to go into their houses so much, but I can't because I don't speak Dutch, I havo had some experience trying to make them understand me, and it U really awful not to know n few wonlj. Today I was looking about "so much that I lost my way coming homo, and when 1 inquired of a policeman I lud to try several words before I could get one that ho understood. I said, with n great deal of sign language: "I am lost," and ho uudorstood that. Then l' said: "Whore is city town stores shops hotel," and only the last word he understood, but that nut me right. You see, I did not oven know tho name of my hotel, it is audi a terrible one to pro nounce, Thero Is a good joke on ppa aud my self; when we left Haarlem tho other evening wo took the wrong train and went toaelty up north instead of com ing south to tho Hague. I Insisted that we wero going iu tho wrong direction, but iuma thought not. so wo were on tin- train for an hour, which is a long time In this small country; aud how horrified When You're Sick and Need Medicine IIINK The BEST is none too pood, bo wo T II IN k nnd if you T I v R ntnll you must THINK likewise. Furthermore, you'll nlwayB Hud at Fry's Drug Store Right Goods at Rignt Prices tho passengers looked when thoy found that wo intended to go to tho Hague. Wo simply got off and waited on tho platform tlllthollnguo train came along, which was nbout half on hour's wait. Wo struck up quite an acquaintance with a Dutchmnn nt tho station, who could speak n llttlo English nnd who had two boiib in Chicago. Ho put us on our right train and mu6t havo told our con ductor about us, 'or all tho conductors along tho line (thoy change oltcn here) know of our mistake without our telling them, and ench ono wore n peculiar grin when ho punched our ticket, which was full of holes. But we did not havo to pay any other fare, and reached our hotel hero about midnight. Then thero wore not two rooms left, as so many Americans had como in that day. But thoy had one largo room with two beds, one in a llttlo alcovo with portieres, and wo took it, nnd 1 still have that room, becaueo tho houso is full. There n 0 four ladles hero who made the same mistake as wo did went to Amsterdam instead of tho Hague and they not only had to pay extra fares, but wero fined f3.50 each for riding without n ticket to thnt place so papa aud I got off easy. Tho cooking In Holland 1h more like ours than any wo havo found yet, and their butter is salted. Their llttlo silver ten cent piccos (four conts in our money) nro bo pretty I am going to try to savo ono It bears tho queen's head wlion bIio was n llttlo girl. Thoy are hitched to tho vegetablo and other carts, so that they are under tho cart in the shado, and the boy or man pushes from behind. Thoy aay it is terribly hot iu Paris, and I wroto to papa this morning telling him I would stay iu Holland till next Friday if ho would let me. I will go to Delft (whore numerous windmills ure) nbout Tuesday if ull goes well, aud then on to Itotterdnru. I was sorry to miss tho photo progress, but I would miss more thnn that to get to stay In Holland und sketch. PERSONAL. Bov. P. S. Knight returned from As- Btoria last ovoniug. Clins.
