Salem may not Iks up to date in all re
spects, but she can havo a strlko once in
auhilc.
This time It is a strlko of tho brick
layers working on tho new wing of tho
penitentiary. There were nine of them
working on the building for Erisson &
Van Patton, tho contractors, and they
all walked out this morning.
There is somo conflict of evldenco as to
tho cause of tho strike, but it seems to
ariso from tho fact that tho hours for
opening and closing of tho gates of tho
prison cnclosuro, Interfero somewhat
with tho hours of work on tho building.
Tho outer gates nro closed while tho
convicts go to and from their work in
tho stovo foundry, and the bricklayers
claim that they aro put to great Incon
venience thoreby.
Thoy say that they aro obliged to go
out on tho 0:30 a. m. car so as to get in
before tho gates are closed at 7 o'clock,
to go to work at 7:30, and this obliges
them to get out nearly an hour earlier
than is necessary. Again at night, thoy
quit work at5:S0 and want to tako tho
car which leaves tho pen at 5: 15, but tho
gates aro closed at that time until about
three tnlnutos after tho car has gono,
obliging them to eithor wait three-quarters
of an hour from tho timo that thoy
quit work or else walk to town.
This thoy say knocks them out of
about ono hour and a half every day un
necessarily. On tho other hand It is said that tho
troublo arises over tho refusal o! tho
workmen to mako up eithor at night or
In tho morning about ten or fifteen min
utccs which aro lost at noon because
thoy aro obliged to quit beforo tho gates
closo at 11 :55 and cannot go to work un
til fivo or ton minutes after 1 o'clock. As
they aro supposed to work nine hours,
tho contractors want them to make up
this tlmo.
Superintendent Loo says that ho was
not cognizant of tho fact that tho rules of
tho prison woro Interfering bo seriously
with tho convenience of tho workmen,
and ho could boo no good reason why
some adjustment should not bo mado
which would avoid depriving tho work
men of an hour and a half daily of their
tlmo.
Later, tho troublo was satisfactorily
adjusted and tho men aro all at work
again this afternoon.
Straaier In Trouble,
A colored man, hailing from Portlan
and giving tho namo of George Lamir
wos arrested by Mght Olllcor Smith at
mi early hour this morning aud thrown
Into the city jnll on a charge of vag
rancy. This afternoon ho pleaded
guilty beforo recorder Judah and was
given " 10, 20 days, or 30 minutes."
Ho accepted tho 30 minutes in which to
get out of town.
Doubt the Hold-up.
Walter J. Sholley, formerly night
clerk at tho Hotel Eugene, was arrostod
in that city, Wodnosday, on a chargo of
larceny by bailee of 00 entrusted to him
by n guest of tho hotel, and which
Shelly claimed was taken from hint by
footpads, tho Incident occurring a couple
of weeks ago.
