TWO HEW OFFICERS.
The List of City Officials Crowlsi lucidly.
Two Mew Ones Added.
The city of Salem has been attaining
tho roputatton of a peaceable town, and
ono governed with a small corps of peace
oflicers, but a start has now becomo
necessary In the othor direction.
At least temporarily, two new mctn
bors have been added to tho forco. They
aro Johnny Patterson and Fletch
Long, and they aro proudly enrolled
under Chief of Police Gibson as dog
catchers. They do not appear on tho
city payroll, but Chief Gibson pays
them out of hio own pocket.
He Is supposed to reimburse hluiBclf
out of tho fees paid by parties whose
dogs are Impounded ; but as a matter of
fact, so fow aro redeemed that by the
tlmo Gibson pays for catching, feeding,
killing and disposing of tho dogs ho is
out, on tho avcrago, about four bits a
head.
This, however, Is not tho fault of tho
two new oflicers and they aro rounding
up tho Btray cnnlnea with commondablo
energy. They have some rough experi
ences, and young Patterson had his hand
quite severely bitten yesterday.
Tho dog tax was duo on Aug. 1st, and
only 42 havo been paid to date. Chief
Gibson found that it was necessary to
tako energetic measures, so ho put tho
boys at work and they havo already
nearly filled tho pound.

of tho petition to lovy a ratable assess
ment upon tho stockholders in Ken
nebec County of tho Northwestern
Ionn and Investment Company, of Du
luth, Minn., began hero to-day. Tho
company is defunct and in tho hands
of a rccceiver. Thousands of dollars
wero poured into this company, which
was ono of tho many Western bubble
concerns that sprung up a fow years
ago. A. C. Otis, of Duluth, who form
erly resided In Augusta. Many wealthy
citizens of the Kust, principally In Malno
subscribed heavily as did many who
took all their hoardings for years from
the savings banks and invested, hired
by prospective big profits. Among
tlio monoy invested was an acad
emy fund. If nn astcssmont should
fall upon tho investors It will bo a
serious matter and sorvo as ono more
lesson to those disposed to indulge in
spallation. Tlio effort to assess will
bo contested strenuously by the stock

Winona conference, which was inaugu
rated four years ago, will begin hero to
morrow. Tho average attendance has
grown from 2,500 to II.oOO. Tho speakers

O.jJ. M .Stlllor, of Crozer Theological
Seminary, Upland, Pa. ; J. F. Carson,
Cornelius Walfkin, of llrooklyn, and

A gentleman from Chico, California,
accompanied by III Page, of tho lted
Front stables, drove out to the Grlllith
farm In tho Wa'do Hills yostorday and
the gentleman purchased threo pair of
Chinese pheasants for shipment to Cali
fornia. Miss Grlllith has orders for
about ono hundred pair of these gamy
birds which sell for about $5 per pair.

Friday evening This is tho end of a
hard day's slght-Eceing in London, and
I am simply dazed, I havo seen so much ; '
but I will try and begin back at tho
stcamor Wednesday afternoon. Tlio
pilot boat did not meet us as I supposed,
but just a pilot and ho carefully
and slowly steered us into South
ampton. I managed to tako a snap at
an immoneu boat in the harbor loading
up with soldiers for China or Africa;
couldn't find out which. Well, wo got ,
off tho St. Paul and found our baggage
on tho wharf under the initial letter of
our name, llio customs oiuccr -looKeit
into my trunk, but that Is all, and then
wo got everything together and sat down
to watt for our special train to London.
In about ttftcon minutes It steamed in
tho funniest looking thing you over eaw
llttlo squeaky whistlo (thoy all havo
that kind), a little bit of an engine and
thoso imcer compartmout cars. All our
luggage (don't say baggago here) and us,
oxcopt my trunk and tho wheels, went
In with us (you know they don't check
anything) and tho rest of tho baggago on
a box car on tho samo train,
a Wo were soon out of tho wharf section
into tho beautiful country, and I was
so overcomo that I could scarcely keep
from crying. Maybe it was because wo
had seen nothing but wator for so long,
but anyway I thought It was more
beautiful than anything I had over seen.
Beautiful Merrio England no fences at
all, but miles and miles of greon hedges
and tho houses, I never In the world
can toll you about them you must see
