FOOT PASSENGER At Baker City Knocked Down Oi Crosswolk-- Rllhtj ofPedtsl.Iaus. llaker City Republican. Saturday evoning nn old gentleman was walking up Main streu and crossing Washington, Just as n team was coming into Main street from Washington, driven by two women. Anyono could obseryo thafthe ogod man was obllviouB of any dangor, for ho walked slowly on, and when within a few feet of tho side walk at Balrd's cornor, ho was rudely awakened from his supposed safety from harm by being practically knocked down by tho poll of tho buggy. Ho saved tho force of a fall by alighting on his hands, his hat falling into tho strot. Thoro were two parts in that street drama which figured conspicuously In saving tho man's life. Tho team was being drlvon in a slow trot and thoy were Intelligent animals, for when thoy knew tho danger could no longor bo averted by man or drivers, thoy came to a full stop by planking their feet on tho crosswalk. This kindly act of the horsos groatly relioved the force of tho blow dealt tho man bv tho forward motion of tho buggy pole. Now all this might have been an accident. The man did not see the team, and if the drivers of the horses did not see tho man, nil would be explained. But the Incidents following do not warrant coming to that conclusion. When tho frighted old man hurried to one side, tho team was Immediately started up, trampling upon the slouched hat which had so recently shaded tho silvered locks of age, and the occupants of that buggy did not possess even the curiosity to look back to know whether the man was injured or not, although men from the walk rushed forward to learn If ho needed any assistance. These aro the real facts, for thoro- porter saw them with his own eyes, and each reader can draw his own conclu sions. But the principal object of writing this Incident Is, that there will be a rude awakening in Raker City one of these days to the fact that the foot panengers have tho right of way on Btroetcrowings and any injury they receive by teams or bicycles, either willfully or carelessly, will result in heavy damages. This run ning and dodging of foot people to evado a collision with some vehicle coming at a rapid rate of speed, or if not fast driven no intention on the part of the driver to stop is expected, is practiced in no other city in Oregon except this A Few Pointers The recent statistics of tho number of deaths show that the large majority die with consumption.
