Cherry Residence Badly Datnofcd.-KurtzlWare-house
Has Narrow Escape.
A houso on Church street between
Forry and Mill, belonging to F. Kurtz
and occupied by Jas. Cherry was badly
damaged by fire Wednesday afternoon.
At half past flvo smoke was seen
Issuing from tho roof and an alarm
of fire was sent In. The whistle of tho
Kurtz Box Factory, which stands closo
by, was also tooted vigorously. A crowd
soon nsscmblod and the contents of tho
houso wero carried out Into the street.
The flro v. as under tho roof over tho
kitchen aud had apparently started from
a defective iluo from tho kitchen stove.
The fire engine soon arrived on tho
sceno, but there wan much dllliculty In
getting a stream' of water onto the fire,
which was raging betweon the ceiling
and tho roof and kept gathering head
way for some time after the fire boys ar
rived. Tho llamos were eventually quenched,
but not until 'tho houso was practically
a wreck, and damaged to tho extent of
about $500. Tho loss is covered by in
surance with tho Beeler agency.
