This morning about 3:30 tho neighbors in tho vicinity ot I7th and Mill streets wore awakened from their slumbers by an unusual noise, nnd it was soon dis covered that some flro-ficnd had eot fire to a largo barn adjoining tho Comsfock residence J. W. Ure, J. II. Neeloy and C. E. Jorgenson, three Mormon Elders, who live tn tho corner of 18th and Mill street wcro the first to arrive and by the assistance of others succeeded in quench ing the flames before any great damage was dono. Tno fiend had secured a pan of hot coals and placing it near tho bam ho placed somo kindling wood upon tho same, which soon set Qro to tho barn. For somo tlmo ho has been trying to burn that portion of tho city up, and has succeedod In burning- two barns on this same alley. It is hoped that the guilty fiend will soon drop into the clutches of tho officerr as he Is dangerous to run at largo. Tho barn was well filled up with hay which belonged to John Mclntyre, as ho has lost two barns within tho past two years. Sheep Mirket Drops. Harry S. Knox, n sheep buyer well known here as the representative of Swift tt Co., the Chicago packers, has returned homo. Ho writes to . T. Wado regarding tho sttoep market as ho has found It, saying: "Regarding the sheep markot, I will say that tho bottom has dropped out, and has gone out of sight. Wo cannot find it. A man from Kllonsburg, Wn., camo hero with about 1,000 head, nnd got only $4.15 por cwt. for them. Thoy wcro fat and weighed 00 pounds. That would net him about 12.75, so that you can sco that he will not mako a fortnne on the shipment. I bought 000 Western owes, allycarllngs,for4 cents a pound, that weighed 80 pounds each. That would mako them worth not more than $2 a head in Oregon. It is apparent feeders will not come out so well as they usually do." This morning about 8 o'clock a team belonging to a farmer named Halm living north of the city became fright- oncd at the street sprinkler while stand- lug In front of thu Good I mo creamery on Commercial street and ran away going north on Commercial at a lively rate. Reaching tho brldgoajcross north Mill creek the horses paid no attention to the upright scantling' which was sup- posed to give warning of tho uusafo con dltion of the bridge. In fact, they didn't seem to care, but crossed the bridge at a twar-forty gate in safety and continued their flight Into tho obscure distance. This incident serves to call attention to the bridge iu question, which is In a omditlon far from satisfactory to tho r 00- plo living in that vicinity. If the bridge ii to bo closed to teams, it should be. closed iu such a way that people driv ing will not start across tit before they are made aware that they cannot cross. Tho bridge should either bo put iu passable condition or adequately fenced, Executloa Sale. Deputy Sheriff B. U, Colbath today eold at sheriff's sale thepropety invohed in the suit of T. T. Tho reg ular excursions to Lighthouse point, I.lfo Saving station, Otter Rock, and Seal Rocks tako soiro of tho tlmo of nealy all summer guests, but as thoy are all part of past programs thoy cost us no time or money this season. However, a few days or a week at Seal Rocks is always an enjoyable sldo spurt from Newport. If Grover Cleveland has any better times at Buzzard's than people can have hero at Newport, if they want fishing, sea-bathing or mcro sauntering on the beaches, I would like to uct his rcclpo. If Prof. Yoder and Gov. Ueor will como over nnd put in a day under my direction I will guaranteo that Grover is not in it. The codfish that como into tho bay are quito gamey. Wo hooked a fifteen pounder tho other morning iu about twenty feet ot water and thought first thu whole bottom ot tho bay camo up to moot us.
