On to,) of this stntcmrnt of an otherwise bright and scintillating Intellect, Mr. (Men- belmor 1ms tho cheek to maku this pro position: "If tholioi.grouor of Oregon, Wash' Ington and California will reduco their output 26 jer cent this year, wo will guarantee growers 15 cents iwr lxiund for nu ui uii'ir imps mat are oi goou llty, quail- Tho distinction of nearly IKI per cent cf tho Oreuoii crop by that "destructive Kst tho blue mold" In tho year 1RW, did notadvam-o tho price of hops to any perceptible degree. Thon how can re ducing tho acreage 25 per cent raise tho price to 10 cents a pound? If tho bltio mold had destroyed all tho hopi In Oregon It is dlfllcult to see that It would have cot any figure In tho price, ami so far as tho operation of the law of supply oud demand goes, that Mr. O. lays so much stress upon, as being tho oaueu of low prices, If Oregon did not raise a hop thogrowers In Washington and Callfor nU would not bo better off, because tho destruction of "OporuetiUas Mr. O. says In 1800, In this state, which grows at least ono-thlrd of all tho hops on the coast, did not advance uHrvf.- In those States. Tho fact Is, tho total acreage is kept u smut, a skilfully concealed feature of tho busi ness. About the time tho next crop comes on tho maiket, suppose It Is discovered that tho acreage has been Increased onofouith, what would they pay the farmer for hops? I'hat the luteiulty of olio sense Is Increased by tho action of other aenses Is n fact which Is well Illustrated by the sense of taste. A cold coin feels heavier thitii one that has beeu slight ly warmed by being carried lu the pocket, and what Is true here of touch Is Just as true of taste. Warm vinegar, warm sugar, warm solutions of suit taste lens sour, sweet or salty than wheu cold. If you put a slight solution of salt or quinine Into a sugar solution of it certain sweetness, the sweetness will seem much greater. Cooks and confectioners ore well a ware of this fact, for they always add to sweet ecu fectlous sonio bitter substance, Just as the perfumers put Into perfume of all kinds at least n little musk. The cook tries to "lift" or "till" the taste, as they say, Just a the perfumer tries to do with tho sense of smell, uud us In acoustics the bass drum or Uiss lol forms it kind of background fur the tone of coloring. Oil the other hand, If a mixture Is made too sweet, without uuy contrasting elements, the iliiumy or sweenies is lost, some thing like .Milton's "darkness from ex ecs of light." The effect of cold In reducing the luteiulty of aweetnes Is well kuowu to any one who hit manu factured Ico cream itt home. If you don't make the ercum n little too sweet before friHwIng. it will not lo sweet enough after the frees lug process. Bii.vsii lark, Or., Juno 27. Standing by n blacksmith shop at this place Is a huge piece of machinery, patched and wrapped and monded until scarcely a bolt or rod la intact as originally com pleted, It is called a, traction or road engine, and Is a hugo ono at that. Securing freight in this country Is tho object of eery merchant's life. To Tho Dalles, a dlstanco of .'!20 miles, over rough mountain roads and dosert sands, is tho neatest point to the railroad or water navigation. It takes a long time to make this trip with an ordinary freight wagon and team, so long that many goods that are fresh on starting out become stalo before they reach their destination. 1'. M. Chrlsman, a leading general merchant of Silver Lake, was persuaded that n traction englno was tho thing, and ho invested in ono and deter mined to rovolutlonlro tho freight bust- uoss between Tho Dalles and Silver Lake. Moro than two years ago he started out from Tho Dnllps with his big traction englno, with a train of wagons loaded with freight attached. Tho roads, at the start, wore favorablo, and tho englno worked liko a charm. Up and down tho long grades loading out from Tho Dalles tho train moved with tho easo of a railroad train, if not with tho rapidity of ono. In fact, tho start was so propitious that Mr. Chris- man on tho vory start wagered $1000 that ho would bo In Silver Luke in 30 days, thinking at tho tlino that ho would tnako a trip in half tho tlmo. Hut in an hour afterwards the troublo began. A rod broke and he had to send back to Tho Dalles for repairs. In another hun dred yards another break occurred and tho blacksmith at Tho Dalles had to bo employed. Then water save out and tho ranchers' wells wore drawn upon, Wood became nn object through tho barren county and tho ranchers woodpiles wore bought at tholr own price. As tlioy progressed, sometimes n mllo in a day, some days n hundred yards, and somo days not afoot, tho thing consumed all tho wood and wator for miles In ecrv direction, Hut Chrlsman was undaunted. Ho said that ho would land tho thing InSllvor Lake. Ho established mov able blacksmith shops, carpontcr shops and shanties for the men to shelter undor, nnd the traction engine and its train of wagons and tho shops and shant ies wore an odd sight as they moved along tho mountain and desert roads. A big crowd accompanied tho train most of the time, as (ho ranchers of oery particular neighborhood and their families camo to seo the novel audit and followed along, when It moved, for hours. As they reached tho moro sparsely Mtlcd communities famine was lelt lu their wako. Wood, water and fuel were completely exhausted. Tho combined efforts of the ranchers could not keep the thing In wood, as in many plan- fuel had to bo hauled for many miles. In a few weeks tlmo somo of the uoods in the wagon began to get stale, ami there wogomt wore detached and taken on to SlUer I.ako by means of tho old-tlmo power horses. Then hills were reached where the engine oould not ascend, and all tho horses for miles around were employed to pull tho maclilnu nml the train to tho top. From morning to night tho shouts to the horses, tho swearing workmen, the oxes of the woodchoppors ond the hammers In the blacksmith and carpenter shoos kept up a din. lint ii. i- .. ... .....i . .-..v ., nn. jiMQiiuiu compared witli Out In the desert After Diiwair to prevent constipation, tako Hood9 9 Pitt Bold everjwbcrs. 25 cents.
