who was all powerful, was deaf to, the
strongest apeals for fair treatment, He

his passengers. The first cabin (are wan
none too good, but the second cabin,
which the company promised would la
elude "first cabin meals, bedding and
privileges', was horrible. Thofe who

warm potatooa and meat, but those of
the second and third tables, found be
fore thfctn cold potatoes, cold meat, cold
tea and cold everything' and all dished
up In the most slovenly and ropulslvo
manner. For the first fow days wo had
pickles and sauco, but after that there
was neither. Hard tack, or sea bread,
was tho only thing (hat nppcarod to bo
Inexhaustible. Kggs thcro was In
abundance, butnot ono for thoso who
occupied tlio second cabin ; vegetables
lay uncooked on tho deck, and when
they began to spoil wero thrown over
board, Occasslonally a fow soda crackers
wore doled out and onca every fow days

bad potatoes, "weo watery and scabby"

boldt Iteds," harsh lean beef and their
soup, everlastingly. Tho very sight of
beef began to turn people's stomachs at
lust, and they demanded ham or pork

tionery nnd raisins, mustard condiments
of all kinds, eggs, cabbage, onions (ex
cept whoro the boys stole a fow from tho
ship stores) wero unknown. Only three
articles on tho tables wero what was
known as good, and they wero peppor,
salt and hardtack.
Tho chief etc watt was gcnorally blamed
for nil this, but ho laid tho blame on tho
captain, tho captain on the company's
agent. I presume all thoso wore to
bin in e, especially tho company, for thoy
should not havo such a bruto for chief
stownrt. Ho was a Moxlcan Greaser.
Ho acted likoahog, looked llko n hog,
nnd was a hog, without an Instinct of
humanity In his ontlro com position
Tho poor fellows In tho stoerago fare'd
worse, If that wero possible. Thoy had
to deal with n numbor of coarsoand sav
ago waiters, who ncgloted no opportu
nity to Insult tho occupants of that de
partment, many of whom wero gentlo-
men of wealth and position, and were in
thu stcerago becauso thoy wero unable

gers, withhold grub from them, curso and
swear at them, with tlio result that
fights wero not uncommon in tho steer
age. Now, it does appear to me that tho
company should bo hold responsible for
tho character and class of help thoy put
iiKn tho boat. A company that was
carrying a cargo amounting In tho aggro
gato to f:i00,G00 could afford to lo a little
moro magnanimous to its patrons than
this. It would havo paid them to havo
expended f00 moro in choice eatables
among tho second cabin passengers. Hy
doing so It would havo mado ovory man
oi thorn a filond, whereas evory man la
now an nvowod enemy of tho company.
Tho Senator herself Is probably as good
and Biifo a bout as sailed for Nomo, but
she is generally poorly manned, and
badly supplied with food such as respect
able men could llvo on. Thoeo, there

a company mean enough to lie and
