Jeurnal: I will try to glvo you a short account of our trip across the Cas cades from Snlem to Eastern Oregon by Banitam route, wo started from Salem n little before noon two weeks ago today and after two and a half days of moun tain climbing over very good mountain ronds wo reached Fish Lake nnd stopped over one day to rest and fish. Tho fish did not seem very plenty. I had no suc cess myself, but my fellow traveler Mr. 0. Roycr caught quito a few, nnd a Mr. onnw mm some outers nau caugnt nutsn pan full of the beauties nnd seemed to tako pity on us, nnd gnvo us nil wo want ed. So after two good equaro meals of fish and a night's rest among the lava beds and lofty firs nnd hemlocks, wo started to climb Sand mountain. Tho road is quite sandy in places but very good and easy for a light 2 horso rig. Wo had filled our jugatnvery lino sping at Fish Lake as we understood it was soma 17 miles to tho next water, but wo had no uso for it. After tlireo hours driving wo found n small lako on tho cast. smeoi ma mountain unit at noon wo enrao to a small stream rushing down the eastern slope. Tho tlmbnr changos very quick in crotsing, mostly bull pine with a little fir on the sido and very Upon, scarcely any under brush. This day's drive found us n iittlo below tho Sisters post ofllco in Crooks county pass ed a school houso nnd a few ranches. Ityo)sccmcd to bo their principal crop of grain. It seeing to mo they nro too high to raise wheat nnd oats. Tho soil seem ed to ba ioor and sandy. Tho had n very heavy rain all over tho east and ns far as wo have come. In fact thero has been goodhowers nearly every day slnco wo have boon here. From tho Sisters wo journeyed east crossed Crooked river andby noon struck tho Deschutes rivor. My nttention was called to tho bridgu bolng very low only a few feet abovo tho water. On Inquiry I learned that tho stream onlv varied a few feet in nyear on account of tho lakes that feed tho river being in tho lava beds this river Is very rapid and clear nnd said to bo very full of fish but wo did not stop only to dinner and pushed on towards Prlnovllle. mo timtior on tills day's drivo was mostly juniper and as we pushed on it ran out and by stopping, time found us about 20 miles north east of Prinovlllo nt tho Lone Pine ranch among tho sago brush and jack rabbits. Tlioy nro so plenty thero that they havo destroyed a part of their crops. That is tlio only placo wn havo seen thorn very bad. Juno 17, Blurted north between thoDo schutes nnd John Day Hlvcr. Passed somo very flno ranches, well fixed, and fiuo nlfalfa meadows but tho country in general very rough and broken. Lots of hay leftover from last car. This evening landed us on Trout creek. Passed two now threshing outfits going in tho Haystack country. Eighteenth, noon found us at Antclopo a very nico Iittlo town, well supplied with water from Bprings. Struck Shanlko by tho middlo of tho afternoon. This is thu terminus of tho Columbia Southern It, It. U'ar is scarco through hero. The town is supplied with water from n gulch by pipes and steam power. Wo watered up and pushed on and made a dry camp. Juno eighteenth struck Sherman county. Land is getting better, moro wheat. Pawed Grass valley; couio very good wheat, but quite a few fields burnt by tho East winds. Karloy is bettor than their wheat and scorns to bo so far as wo have coino. Nineteenth, passed Moro and Wasco, all wheat, wheat. Crossed tho Columbia at Itufus. Had to get nway from tho river, ns the sand was drifting, and thu wind howling moro than a web foot was used to. Camped a few miles up tho river found Hale's early peaches ries. Ten miles nt the river wo turned north. Found tho emntry very rolling, nnd tho land very goal, and quite a few farms in what Is called the Goodno hills. There, wheat was extra flno, all headed out, and field after field us clean as a pin, nothing but wheat, that is I mean no weeds like wo nail seen in oilier parts. Also passed large fields of Iluld Ilarloy that was ery flno. Ily noon struck Rock creek. Tho valley is stoney and rough and seemed to bo occupied by Indians All I could tee they rnleo in u little hay and iwnies. Next day arrived at Jim Zumwalti, an old friend of Mr. liogera from Kansas, he lives between Arlington and Cleveland. This country is very high, you can gee all of Eastern Oregon between the Columbia rivor and tho Hlue Mountain. They are better supplied with water and timber hero than Eastern Oregon. Lots of springs and where they havo no spring they ob tain water by digging from 6 to 10 feet. Somo oak oir the creeks, tho first wo havo seen on the eastern sido. The north side of the county has a heavy belt of fine timber commencing at Hick olton ami running west to the Cascades, the land through here, like a big part of Sherman county, Oregon, is what is called scab land and the only way I know to describe it is this One day it was all covrl with rock and whon the soil w put on there was not enough to cover it all. It varies i-om nearly all rock on some quarter Motions to nearly all coil on others. The average is Mippoix-d to bo one-third rook land two-third toil. Tho soil is very otiy worked (ln man will farm more cm here than two can In tho valley. Qiittiahugf rcent of their crops is volunUer and seems to be nearly as good Mulien Hioy How- and sow. Haifa buthel to the acre is all they sow. Ciruin stools wonderfully here and tio inuchtcrd Is wort than net enough Raw land U telling at 1 H to t per nor-, improved land from 5 to til) per aciu according io impruveuicuu tliey a a rule r ry anr. When that tired feeling, the first rheu-. matte pain, the first tvarrtings of Impure blood are manifest, take Hood's Sarsapa rilta and you will rescue your health and probably save a serious sickness. Be sure ta get Hood's, because iD v ? . . . CP old sheep nnd cattlo country and of course lika all of tho pastern sido tho grass is mostly killed out, but by fencing and enro tho bunch grass will return. Their cattlo hero aro much largor than our cattlo in tho valley and fat. Sheep aro all driven to tho mountains in tho summer. Their climato lioro is much dryer than tho valley. Tho cool west winds BcemB to be tho salvation of tho country and all they seem to dread is the hot cast winds. To people with lim ited means that want to farm and raiso etock 1 would rovorso old lloraco Greeley's advica and say young man go east. I eeo chances hero to got homos and live In caso and plenty. There Is not much attention paid to fruit hero. They depend on the Yakima valloy for their supply and as that Is our objectivo point, I will closo for this tlmo. Respectfully yours, W. II.
