BELLIGERENT QUAKER
On Trial In the Police Court for Assault and
Battery.
The trial of Andy Raymond, charged
by I.. Landon wsth assault and battery,
took place before City Recorder Jntlah
this afternoon.
The defendant is ono of the troupe of
entertainers assisting tho (Juackcr doc
tors, In their nightly exhibition on State
street, and the trouble occurred Satur
day night.
It seems that thore has been more or
less friction between the Quacker aggre
gation, and the boys of tho city. Tho
boys having caused considerable dis
turbance at the meetings which aro car
ried on by the medicine men, under a
license issued by tho city, tho latter
being inclined to take the law Into their
own hands instead of calling upon the
police.
On Saturday night tho man Ray
mond started through tho crowd selling
medicine, and tho story la that ho was
In the habit of pushing his way
roughly with little consideration for la
dles or children. Ho pushed through
u crowif of young fellows near the plat
form, shoving some of them roughly to
ono side. When he came hack the boys
had it in for him. Ho pushed Landon
off the aldo walk aud Landon came for
him. Raymond again pushed him away
and told him to keep, off, but Landon
returned, and got ono in tho face.
In tho fracas, Fred Kress also went
up against it, with tho snmo result.
l'olico Olllcer Smith was In the crowd
but not at tho immeciato scene of the
disturbance.
Landon at once went and sworo out a
complaint, and Raymond was arrested.
He deposited f 25 cash ball and was re
leased until this morning, when he was
arraigned and plead "not guilty," tho
trial being postponed until '- p. m., to
get witnesses.

The transport Lenox now at Astoria,
will take on a cargo of horses aud mules
for the I'hlllplnes. The horses are des
tined (or the Sixth cavalry, and tho
mules will be used as pack animals. The
horses were purchased in the Kaat and
aro now on the way to Vancouver bar
racks, where they will be given a few
days rest before being taken on board
Uie steamer. The mules are
now at the oat. The tranapo-t will
take forage (or the stock aud a full crew
of hootlera. Her outbound route has
not yet been determined, but she will be
likely to put In at Hilo, where the ani
ai ul a will be put ashore and a few days
for rest and exercise given.

Harry ltraut was fatally Injured on
Saturday night atGrautt l'ass, by falling
from an Iron ladder en the end of a
freight car on the extra freight. Tbe
ladder broke aud the man went uuder
the wheels. This makes four trainmen
killed or badly hurt In about a month on
the Oiegon lines of the Southern PAolric
railroad.

advantage than anything heretofore
furnished tho Oregon National Guard.
