At tlio First Presbyterian church Bun day evening, Prof. Gilchrist Stewart, of the Tuskegee Institute, of Alabama, de livered an address on "Tlio Negro Prob lem and Christian Education Among the Negroes in the South." Tlio church was fairly welt filled and a good Impression was made by the young colored man, lie Is a ready speaker, has n very good voiro and uses excellent English. Hesiwke about three-quarters of an hour on the subject indicated, and his talk was Interesting, both for tlio Infor mation it contained and as giving the view of an educated Negro ns to tlio problem of his race. He briefly outlined the history of llio Negro in the Houth and from the record mado at tlio time of tlio civil war, ho showed that tlio Negro's greatest char acteristic is fidelity to n trust. Immed iately after the war n great mistake had been madu In tlio plan of education adopted for the Negro. He was taught Latin and Greek, but was not taught how to grnsp tlio real opportunities which lay beforo Jilm. Tbo Industrial situation nas in his hands at that time, but the old generation of skilled labor ers, mechanics, brick-layers, overseers, etc., taught in thu school of experience during slavery, had been allowed to pass away without being replaced. It was to remedy this that the Tuske gee Institute was founded. Started ten years ago in n little log cabin with 20 students, It now had 2000 students and nmplo accommodations In tlio way of buildings, all erected by the students themselves from material mostly pro duced by them.
