Intact, his ago character and experience flt him (or tlm iwsltion ami ho should bd elected That James Hamilton Lewis is an orator, no one who heard him Thursday evening in Marion rqnare will ever hon estly dispute. Though many among his audience had gone to the equaro to hear John O. Wooloy, the great prohibition orator, who had been announced to speak there, very few indeed left the grove so long as tho flowery periods continued to fall from the lips of tho gifted visitor from our sister state. The Prohibition people had fixed up tho square and tho speaker's stand with new plank seats, but on Mr. Wooley's arrival it was found tnat his voice was not suited for out door Bpcaklng. Bo they procured the Y. M. C. A. hall and very courteously allowed tho other peo ple to reap the benefit of their prepara tions. On account of tho short notice and tho dearth of tho advertising that it was practicable to do, tho audience was not so largo as it would haro been had every ono in this vicinity known that tho noted ex-congressman from Washington was to bo here, yet it was a large crowd forffalein. Tho orator of tho evening was intro duced by Chairman Mott, and until 10 o'clock ho held his hearers charmed with his eloquence. Owing to tho arrangement of tho lights, his appearance was largely a mat tor of guesswork, but his words found their way to all ars, except when an ill-mannerly gathering, maleand femalo, on tho outskirts of tho crowd compelled him to pause until their maudlin cacklo had subsided. He has a clear, llcxlblo voice, under porlect control, and to a ready flow of the most polished and finely rounded periods ho adds tho art of tho born and cultured orator. Ho dovotcd his remarks to trusts and impariallsm. Ho sovorely arraigned somo ltepublican party leaders on the score of the formor, and vehemently protested against the latter as unAmeri can and a subversion of tho principles on which tlio government Is founded. Ho laid tho sins of imperialism, how ever, to the trusts, and In fact charged those aggregations specifically with all tho woes which oillict this country to day. Ho was frequently applauded, and tho mention of llryan's natno was greeted with tho greatest enthusiasm. Ho made many telling hits, and aroused a laugh by inquiring, "How can tho ltepublican party permit tho corset trust when it must bo so neces sarily opitosed to expansion?" ltefcrr- ing to tho Forto Hlco matter, ho raid, "If the tariff doesn't make trusts tho trusts at least seem to mako the tariff," Ho preclaimed: "Tho Democratic party is, as it always has been, for legitimate expansion." And ho cited Jefferson's rule that when a navy would bo required to protect a proposed acquisition, that was tlio limit. I'erhapa tho strongest points ho mado against Philippine cxpenslpii were these: that if wo wanted tlio open door wo must give the open gate; and that tho bring ing of hordes of cheap labor under the flag would result in the impoverishing of American labor; that tho raw mater ial would bo shippod to tho.o lands and thero made up with cheap labor for the supplying of that trade Ho cited tho cotton manufacturing industry which lormeriy gavo employment to many thousands of people In Kngland but has now becm transferred to India where cheap labor Is uvallable. He ;did not touch on local Iisues, though he paid a glowing tribute to tho lnagiilllccnt reconl of the second Orrgor-t ni well as tho Indian war Yeterons.
