served to tho old veterans, by the ladles
of the W. It. C, nt tho G. A. It. hnll In
tlio insurance building. This was highly
appreciated after the long tramp.
Tho lino nppearanco and perfect order
of the two cemotrics was duo to tho two
sextons, Barney Simpson and Jeff Bo-
banan and their nidea.
Tho weather could not havo been hot
tcr. It was cool and pleasant, with
light clouds, and there was very little
dust, usually a disagreeablo feature of
Decoration day.

Tho stores and business bouses of tho
city were closed during tho afternoon.
AT LEK MISSION.
Whilo the main exercises of tho day
took plnco at tho cemeteries south of
town, the old soldiers nt rest in tho Leo
Mission cemetery woro not forgotton.
During tho forenoon tho Union Veterans'
Union nnd the ladies of tlio G. A. It.
went to Lee Mission in a body and with
slmplo ceremonies decorated with flowers
tho graves of their old comrades resting
there. A goodly number were present,
and undoubtedly more would have been
there had tho meeting liccn announced
in Tut: Jon una l; but, unfortunately,
thoso whoso duty it was to leave n notlco
nt this nlllco proved recreant to their
trust, nnd this paper was not notllled,
thus being deprived, much to its regret,
of nn opportunity to notify its readers in
time.
After the ceremonies were over tho
participants returned to tho city, where
to tlio number of over BO thoy partook of
n bountiful dinner, nnd in tho afternoon
and evening they mingled with tho other
old soldiers nt tho cemetery and tho
church.

to tho doors, nnd many stood up, though
the aisles were filled with chairs. Tho
program was carried out as published,
and was of it very interesting character
and appropiiato to tho day.
Tho Chemawa hand, tho Salem Choral
Society, under tho skillful direction of
Professor Soloy, and a male quartet con
sisting of Mesrs. Seloy, Belknap, liosclien
and Drew, rendered patriotic music, and
tho soprano boIo by Mrs. Jordan Purvino
was a genuine treat.
Miss Mabel Carter recited Kipling's
"Hecesslorml"iuid Riley's "The Drum,"
very effectively, Alfred Wright recited
an incident In the war In a creditable
manner, and Mia Maud Griswold did
exceedingly well with a piece commemo
rative of tho gallantry of one-armed

The address by Itcv. II. A. Harden, of
Portland, was an exhaustive review of
American histsry, rising at times
to eloquence Ho gave all oxpan-1
sionists n chaiico to applaud, but depre- I
cated imperialism. He also woke tho
woman suffragists to enthusiasm. Tho
only bitter note In his address was ex
pressive of his disappointment in not
cueing Old Gloiy waving where he first
looked for it on arriving in the city
over Willamette University. It has
been a long'timo si nro tho stars and
stripes have graced the fliigttaff of that
Inblitiitlou.
