Wabiiinuton, May 21, The Kentucky governorship caco was decided by tho
United States supreme Court today in tho interest of Beckham, nfllruilng tho de
cision of the Kentucky court of appals.
Tho opinion was handed down by Chief Justico Fuller and tho enso was dis
missed for want of jurisdiction und that tho determination of eases of contests for
stato ofilcers must necessarily bo settled by tho political branch of the govern
ment. Tho branch had not acted in tho Kentucky caso when general assembly
took jurisdiction. Thoro was no appeal from tho assembly's decision, which was
favorablo to Goebol and Breckhnm, excopt to the tribunal of the people which
tribunal tho Chief Justico said was always in session. The opinion was not unani
mous, Justiceg Brewer, Harlan and McKounn dissenting.
Tho speech of Senator Wellington,
which camo next, was cheered to the
echo. Tho senator said that, as Ameri
cans, we always had hold that all men
woro entitled alike to lifo, liberty and

Monroe Doctrine, recalling Secrotary
Root's words that we must be prepared

Senator Wellington was instructed by
unanimous vote of the audlunco to pres
ent in Ihn Senate Senator Teller's reso
lution of sympathy with tho Boors.

21. On Thursday morning, the 10th,
as O. L. Chamberlain was walking along
tho beach, ho discovered somo black ob
jects In tho edge of tho water, and upon
approaching ncaror ho discovered that
thoy woro whales, which had bocomo
stranded from somo can bo or other.
Thoro wore seven of thorn nnd thoy
were making tromondous efforts to get
back into deep water, without uvall.
Tho tldo was leaving them. Thoy would
open their mouths and draw in about a
barrel of water and then spurt it through
the bolo in tho top of their heads 20 foot
into tho air, and lying sometimes on
thoir sldos It was liko gottlng in tho
cross-flro of n hose company.

knlfo to carvo thorn up. On his
return ho turned leosa with his
gun to kill them, but after wasting
a few shots he saw that ho could not kill
thorn in that way, so ho suited Into them
