Hart replies. States His Qualifications for the Office of District Attorney. Dallas. Ore.. May i, 1000. EditobJedilval: Inju.tice to myself and those who nominated me, I desire to correct some statements that have been made in your columns regarding my candidacy for tho ofnco of district attorney. I do not think these state ments were made through malicious motives, but rather from a misappre hension of facts; nnd, therefore, pre sume that you will accord mo space for a statement of the facts. It has been urged against me that I am very young, too young, to hold the ofllcoof District Attorney, ,1am thirty one years of ago, and havo been a resi dent of this district for fifteen years- Mr. Jeffrey my opponent, Is also thirty ono years of ago, bnt has resided in this district lees than two years. Again, it lias been said that I am Just out of school and havo never had n caso In court. Tho records show that I passed the required examination before our supreme court and was admitted to the bar in 1895. My opponent was also admitted in 1B95, hence you aro mis taken when you say that ho lias been n practicing lawyer for 10 years. You aro hIso mistaken when you say that he was prosecuting attorney for four years. My oxperienco In the law includes both criminal and civil cases; and I have practiced in all state courts. Jus lln, nmintv. Circuit, and Bunremo. and also in tho Federal Court, In allot which I havo had reasonably good sue ess. If any one doubts theso state ments, let him consult tho records of tho courts. As to my ability os n lawyer, 1 am willing to leavo that to my clients, to tho attorneys who havo been associ ated with me, or who havo tried cases against mo, or to tho judges noforo whom I havo appeared as counsel. It Is truo, I have been superintendent of ecliools in Polk county for two terms, and so tar as l know have given sattsiac tion to tho patrons and teachers of tho rchools. At tho samo timo tho work of tliRofflco has not materially interfered with my law practice, owing to tho fact that Polk is a small county and tho work of tho ofllce is not more than half as much as in some of the larger counties. If I am elected to tho ofllce of district attornoy. overy criminal will bo prose cuted to the full extent of tho law, but I shall not use tho ollico to persecute any one. hvery ono will uo treated with fairness and consideration. Please ulvo this letter spaco in your paper in the Interests of justice. Yours truly, Julius N. IIaiit. X JUST ARRIVED AT X A PALMISTRY! im si 111';:.!
