The Association Greatly in Need of Funds
and Public Meeting Is Called
for Sunday Evening.
The following communication is from
tho directors of tlio Salem Y. M. O. A.
"Shall tho Young Men's Christian As
sociation of Salem cloe its doors?
That is tho question which wo nre com
pelled to put seriously to tho people of
Salem.
"In doing so, wo feel it our duty to
atuto plainly and frankly tho exact con
dition of tho association, n statomont of
which wo herewith submit, believing
that when tho good people of this city
rea'izo thnt tho Y. M. C. A. is actually
in need, nml has arrived nt tho point
where it must havo help, or close its
doors, they will come to tho rescuo.
"Tho association debt, nsido from tlio
deficiency in current expenses, now con
sists of two notes, originally for $700
each, tho unpaid principal on each of
which is now $255. This debt is p nc
tlcally provided for hy tlio holders of
tho notea who subscrlbo fl00 per year
each to tho Y. M. 0. A. work, which
amount ia applied on their notes.
"Tho expense of running the associa
tion during tho last three years was na

"The reason for this deficit lies, not in
tlio fact that the canvass for subscrip
tions did not como up to past years, but
in the fact that wo cannot hold a iiiem
berslilp contest this year, a means which
before tho novelty wore off, nettod tho
association from 1500 to 11200 er year.'
"Wo nre therefore compelled to resort .
to a new means for raising funds. i
"Somo ono may say: 'Tho nssocla-,
tlon ought to lo self-sustaining, thoeo
who tiro the privileges ought to pay for.

tho privileges it gives, it would bar from ,
its doors tho very ones whom it seeks to
attract. If self sustaining, it would 1
only o club available for the few who

ducted a first-class night school, with an '
enrollment of 37 studends, mostof whom
are young men w ho work during tho day
and are anxious to havo thisoportunity
for self-improvement.
"We haven well-equipped gymnasium,
hot nnd rolil shower and tub baths, a I
well.Mocktd reading room, open to tho I
public, a library, parlors and game
rooms, and everything that we can pro
vide with the means at our disposal, to
attract and Instruct young men.
"Tho average daily attendaiuo at our
rooms since October last bus been aliout
