cut of nearly ono-lmlf. Gutting sober is
not pleasant, but It is profitable and
necessary. It will take years to clear up
the wreck, but in spito of this handicap

Kansas City, Mo., Feb. 10. A Times
special from Port Arthur, Tox., nays:
"James Sweeney (white) was lynched
ut 1 o'clock this morning. Sweeney was
a cotton fcrewmnn foreman, and had
killed Charles Crumbac, a fellow-laborer,
by jamming a bayonet through his
neck.
Tho crime was co.umittcdon tho after
noon of February 1, in n room with no
wlttncstcs presont, and is said to have
resulted from a saloon fljlit that took
placo a few hours previous. Monday
Sweeney was indicted for murder, in the
first degree.
Ho was placed on trial at Beaumont,
Tex., Friday, and last night tho jury re
turned a verdict of not guilty. As soon
as ho was released, Sweeney returned to
Port Arthur, arriving hero at 12-30 thfs
morning.
Word had been telegraphed ahead that
ho was coming, and a mob met him ot
tho depot, marched bim up town and
strung him up to a telephone polo with
out ceremony In the first attempt tho
r apo broke

coful by tlelng Sweeney's legs so his
feet could not touch ground and draw
ing up tho ropo taut. Thoir work ac
