"Ii'iiii Miit nn fimrina lilrn nana. il1 little 3-year-old Fred Evans, as ho was lifted down from tho locomotive of the St. .TohitB motor line yesterday at AU bana. He had mounted tho englno at St. Johns pulled open tho throttle and remained on the seat alono on a mad ride of eoven miles. Tho young engineer is tho son of V. B. Evans, at St. Johns, onglneoron the motor lino. Ho had often been on tho engine, antl bis father had explained to him how tho lovor is pulled and tho wheels i started moving. Tho cnglnn lies over an hour at St. Johns, Just by tho water tank, and dur ing tills tlmo yesterday, whllo Mr. Evans was at homo at lunch, llttlo Fred walked down to tho onglno, mounted tho scat and opened wido tho throttle. Tho machlno was full of coal and water, and was ready for tho road. Several peoplo saw tho boy start, but no ono was near enough to catch tho engine. Tho news was at otice told to Mr. Evans, and ho reached tho track just In time to sea tho locomotive, with his boy on board, tils appcor nrotind a curve. The father was wild witli grief and fear, and tho boy's mother was almost prostrated. Tho noivB spread llko wlldllre, and tho wholo town turned out. Excitement was In tense, women and children cried and men offered stmgestions. Master Me chanic Michael F. Hrady was at that cud of tho lino and at once telephoned to stations along tho lino. Portsmouth and Peninsular were notified, and tho men at theeo points tried to board tho ongino as it dashed by, but its speed was too great. Mr. Hrndy also notified tho odtco at Alblna, and a party of men ran out tho lino northward to meet tho wild onglno. In coming up tho long grade toward Alhina, tho steam had died down a llttlo, but tho register still showed 80 pounds. John Woods, a motornian on tho City it Suburban rail way, was tho first man to meet tho engine. Ho caught tho hand rail and svvung up, but in doing so ho was dragged IK) or 70 feet. Ho at onco turned oil tho steam, and the onglno slowed down and stopped. It was then young Fred made the remark concerning his ability as an engliioer-drlvor. Tho hoy was not scared at all, but seemed rathor proud of his feat. When the cuglno first dashed out of At. Johns ho was frightened, and as ho camo through Portsmouth llko a shot out of a gun ho wasyclllnulustlly for "mamma." After coming several miles, however, ho again boeamo bravo and hold his posl tfon on tho seat with composure, with his hand on tho lover, llko a veteran. Tho engine was stopped In front of tho homo of Dr. Davis on Commercial street, and was quickly run back to St. Johns by Mr. Woods with tho boy Fred still on board. Mr. Woods said his success in boarding tho engino was n snrpriso to htm, as well as to every ono else, as Its speed was still considerable. Tho on glno had mado tho run from St. Johns to Alblna in less than half an hour. In tho moantimo tho news of the res cuo hod been sent by ttlephono to tho frightened paronts.ond for tho remainder of tho day thero was great Joy In all St, Johns. Or.
