Ilo reports things wlde-awako there and many people Hocking in, but made no investments and has not decided to leave Salem. He considers Sumpter the coming town and loooks for much business there In tho spring. Ho found many Salem people tliere, among them Chas. Hobliu, D. K. Kcnworthy, A. K. Dagcny, Mr. King, 11. J. Herschbach and others. Tho trip from Salem requires 21 hours travel, taking tho narrow gauge road from Ua ker City. There is four feet of snow on tho ground nnd good sleighing. Henry Is quite enthusiastic over Hint mining region, but still cannot forget that Sa lem Is one of the best towns on tho Pa cific coast. Motion County Ctops. A (iervals correspondent rcort8 that there Is an unusually largo acreage of fall-sown wheat planted, which farmers report as growing nicely, under tho pre vailing favorable weather conditions. Stock has wintered well, and will enter the spring season under favorable auspices. There is nothing transpiring in the hop market, except that growers ate feeling better and anticipate a market soon at reasonable prices. Few hops have been sold in this vicinity so far, and as it Is an Iinxrtant money-making factor, times are necessarily quiet, and wore it not for potatoes, there would be little, If any, looso money. Potatoes aro enhancing In prico from 20 ..to 27 cent per bushel, sacks fur nished ; hut dealers say the Increased priro does not repay losses on account of rot nnd blight. Dealers who had stocked up heavily reort a loss of 20 er cent, and the same can ho snld of farmers who have their spuds hurled in tho ground. A change of seed must lio had, else tho famo of Oregon ns it potato-growing atato will bo lessened and tho dealers, as woll as tho growers, be robbed of a paying agricultural proposition. Tho low lands, or bottoms, aro worse affected by disease than aro tho up or rolling lands. Potatoes will prove bail keepers this season. There has literally beou ilo wheat shipped so far of thu 18110 crop from this IKjint. It Is conservatively claimed that tliere is stored here fully 60,000 bushels of wheat and oats of tho 18!KI crop, and all of it Is a choice character. Expensive Smartness Newt Morris was arrested at Turner yesterday and brought liefore .Justice Johnson last ovenlng on a charge of dis turbing a public meeting.
