Chief of Police Gibson yesterday aftet- ternoon arrested W. 11. Gray, a morphine llond, having caught him In act of stealing iron from the ruins of the Mooring mill. Gray had apparently Immii working tho same mine before. Ho would lnrrow a wheelbarrow from a junk dealer and go to the small building on the classic banks of Mill creek, back of tho water works. Then ho would follow the course of tho old mill race to the former site of tho flour mill, dig out somo old iron, carry it in a gunny sack to where his faithful wheelbarrow awaited him, watched by his equally faithful femalo companion. By the time tho similes of darkness fell he would have a load, which he would then convey to the In nocent and confiding junk man, who would buy it, all unconscious that he was lecolving stolen goods. Yesterday Olllcer Gibson, found wall-worn path from tho wheelbarrow rendezvous mentioned down to tho mill ruins, and proceeding cautiously found the culprit down in the old wheel pit In dustriously gathering scrap iron, which he was putting In gunny eacks. He ar rested tho thief aud lodged htm In the city Jail over night. This morning Julius Hopf camo be fore the reconler and swore out a war rant for Gray's wife. He had missed his axe, and searching the second-hand stores, found it In one of them, and the proprietor said he bought it of Mrs Gray. Platform Improvement, The Southern Pacific has men at work today tearing up a largo portion of tho old wooden platform at the north end of the Salem passenger depot, as tho same has rotted out badly. In its place will be put gravel and crushed granite, I which will be a great improvement. I City Tax Receipts.
