FIRST DOOR SOUTH FIRST DOOR SOUIH FLAX GRAIN SACKS. New lnduslsy to Be Started at San Quentin. California Will Benefit by Recent Exper menu Begun in Oregon. Mrs. Win. P. Lord, origlnaator of tlu Oregon Woman's Flax Fibre association who has Just sailed for Huenos Aycrs would bo Uellghted at this from Fan Francisco : Tho prospect of creating a new Indus try in Calitornia by making sacks at San Quentin out of California llax ami hemp, promises to bo a reality. Should Ibis idea succeed, it will result in ereat benefit to the stato, will necessitate tho remodeling of all tho machinery in tho statu prison mill and will keep at homo $150,000 annually expended by import ing juto from Calcutta. Besides the benflt to tho Btate, the sacks will bo of vastly tupoior quality, and can bo sold at the satno and possibly lower rates than tho Calcutta rates. These facts were brought out Saturday at a meeting of thu directors of the prison. Some time ago W. J. J. Cun ningham of Salem, Or., an expert upon llax nnd hemp weaving was employed to Investigate thu feasibility of making sacks, roH) and twine nut of native llax and hemp. Thu results of his exiiert menu wore presented to tho hoard, and demonstrated to thu members that it is not necessary to purchaso luto from a foreign country when fiber of aiicrior quality can bo raised here almost as cheaply. The quality of tho bags weaved on juto machines, which are not exactly titled for work on other ma terials, was pronounced to Im vastly superior u inu into uugs, ami tun ex periment was declared a success. It was shown that the cost at present is a little greater than thu actual ex Ikmiso of making up jute, Including its importation, but still tho sacks could bo sold to farmers at a lesncr rato than thine imported from Calcutta. Though no dellnito action was taken, landing further exiuriment, tho general opinion of the members of the Hoard foreshadows the discarding of jute and (he use of of llax and hemp us pooh us there Is a sutllcint supply in the Pa title Coast states to equal thu demand. At present Han Quentin Jute sacks sell at C.'i cents apiece, while tho bags of Calcutta, of Inferior make, are quoted 7 cents. The hemp, or llax bag can be cold at 0 cents us an outeldu margin. San Qentln produces about one-sixth of tho Juto bags of tho world's output, Calcutta making most of the remainder. The annual demand on the Coast ex ceeds 211,000,000 bags, a-id between 0,000,000 and 7,000,000 is tho utmost 'ca pacity of tho State mill. I'ndcr State law, a prollt of not more than I cent IK'r bag is allowed to bo charged for convict-made sacks; thus it is obvious that each sack costs tho Stato -It) rents. Kven at this small rato of prollt, and with thu expenditure of over $ 150,000 for Jute, last year the agregato profit amounted to more than $10,000. Using homo production of materials it Is lx lioved will remit in not only a siiorlor article, but in great hcuetlt to thu rUate and a corresponding lack of com petition. In his monthly report Warden Agu rre announced tho results of Cunningham's experiments and presented made hags as proof of success. Fearing that another attempt will be made to corner the sack market by seeulators the directors decided to adhere strictly to the 'rule, recently FUEE DELIVERY. i- rj ' . : t and Lining hni will not be ! . -II ..-l U. nniri imidl' rA .small sj?es and narrow D VWK OF robiumur ur rujiw'-'- BAD BREATH IiniUltjnhoutcSt ( nr, until Ohio CANDY a&fiKo&eto traoi hu niatsTmo ., ',: 0URE CONSTIPATION. ... sum., ,.., (.,,, ni,,,. unnu . rk , ?lQT0E!aft S"Man1 rrantlT? allSrnr W IU-BAU ut,u UUnKTobacrollaMi. made, forbidding tha sale of! more than WOO sacks at n tlmo to any pur chaser. ' , t 7 Only Machine of tho Kind On the Pacific Coast. An invention That Improves the tty or the Product and of the Future Crops Qual When one undertakes to cnumornto tho many labor-saving machines that man's inventive niind has produced dur ing U10 litst halt century, he has to agreo with him who said: "Man Is a won", derful being." Onoofthe newest ma chines Invented tolwueflt the agricul turist is tho "Eureka" oat clipper, In vented and patented in New York. Ono of these llttlo wonders, and tho only machine of its kind on tho coast, has been purchased and brought to Salem by A. M. Humphrey ,t Co., who have set It up at their grain ware house, at tho corner of Union and Water streets, where it is now boing operated. Oats, as they como from tho thresh ing machlno, are tlrst run through a screen to tnko Out all sticks or pebbles They then enter the clipper and tho product comes out at four different out- lots. At onejhoro Is a collection of chaff, hulls and light oats; at another nil the light oats; at No. 3 iout the dust and clippings from the good oats are gathered, while from No, thu cleaned product Is run Into sacks. The great advantage of this llttlo nut chinu is that n farmer having a crop of ordinary oats' that may not Iki mitrkcta me as standard oats, can run His crop through tho clipper, taking out the light oats, foul seeds and chaff, leaving him it llrst class article that will com mand the highest price and llnd it ready sale 011 any market. The increased value of his cleaned ar ticle will more than pay the slight cost and thu grower will havu his cleanings to chop as additional gain. Thoso who want to sow oats for thu market cannot afford to tisu any other but this cleaned product, free front nil weeds and wild oats. Messrs. Humphrey d Co. are thu sole ugents for the machine, and will lie pleased to havo farmers and grain buy ers call hI the wuro house and lnH-ct the oat cleaner and ulipur In opera tion.
