The New York State Crop Not as Large as That of Last Year. WATERVIM.K, NKW YOI1K. A few purchases of early varieties have been niado at 13c to 15c. These are nearly all small lots in tho iH'Ighborliood of S to ten bales. The weather this week has been cool, dry and pleasant and has proved just right for hops. Yards that It was thought last week would not keep have held their o n and a good quality is bo- Ing flicked. Our growers have been greatly encourage by the favorable con ditions of tho weather and some of the Canada yards that were left w ill now undoubtedly be picked after tho Kngllsh Clusters aro picket. It has been a most fortunate change in tho weather and came In tho nick of time. The English Clusters aro being secured In tine shape. Although the weather" has a cloudy and damp appearance by spells It is not thought the hops will take any hurt be fore they can be picked. Tho yield is clearly very much less than last year, which it will bo remem bered was below the average yield. Many growers give tho number of boxes picked last year and this, from the same acreage, and in a large majority of in stances It Is fully one-third less than last year. The hops stopped growing during tho dry weather, and are, there fore not ns large but they may make up in strength what they lack in full devel opment. In a majority of smaller yards picking will lo over with this week. N. V. Journal A llullrttn. Contracts for lSitii hops are unimport ant in this state at pre-ont, and, accord ing to hod accounts, nothing remarkable or, at least, iiiiimiiiI is being elfirtcd on the l'aellic coast. Seemingly the ma jority of buyers are content to wait un til goods aro in marketable form before making nuy extensive engagements and values, therefor, are not clearly defined. In yearlings there is only a moderate buslues, mostly at 11 and in cents net here, or on that bases, for prime quality. Olds aro very quiet, with prices ns quot ed, greatly nominal. New York Statu crop of 1898 choice 1'J to lit cents. Pacific Coast crop. 18IIS, choice, 1 1 cents. Cooerstonn Hepublieau: The hop crop will be nearly all lumoeted this week. A few growers will run over into next week with tholr pkkiug. Tlio quality will lm more variable than in most years, and yet there will bo a good many very line, choice samplos, Tho rejiorts from the growers are that u great many nro getting only one-half tho number of boxes they did last year, and conioonly one-third, and a good many two-thirds, while once in a while a grower can be found with an luoreoted acreage, who will get a little more. Ifetiitmtes of growers are of aslwrtugeof 10 to 60 tr cent from last year's srop. Dealers' es timates are of a slwirlage of 36 to SS tier cent. With good weather a heavy hop crop will bo gathered h good condition. A hop sale of tho 18i)tl crop was eon sumated in Ktigene, on the 7th Inst., when William Seavysold to Ilorst Ilros., 21 bales of the Fugles variety for 10 cents ter pound. Generally those early hops do not bring us good a price as tho later ones. Hays tho Independence HnUrprlse: Miss Kiiinia Henkle picked her two lxixosofhopH on Wednesday, making her 80 cents for her day's work. She is u years old. Tho two children of J. N. Picking of the I'ugglus variety of hops on tlio A. J. Jormuu farm, on Howell prairie, was completed on Thursday. Tho yield was 12,000 pounds, and a very excellent quality Is roxirtcd. Mr. Jet- man has several moreacrcH of t'i'e late hops. A visit to the Davis hop yard, near Albany, shows the bops to lo in first- class condition. Picking was com menced hist Thursday and 108 boxes of hojis were put in the big dryer mid 70 Imixus in the small one. Mr. Davis has .V) acres to pick and alxiut (15 pickerd are doing the work, Thoyardn are in excellent condition and tlio hops are large and plump. The Journal yesterday received a re quest from the Now York Daily World to have Oregon's Capital City partici pate in honoring Admiral Dewey upon his arrival in New York by tiring i sa lute. An expression was desired from Gov. Geer upon the subject, nnd the Sa lem lire department was hHtod to do tho artillery act. Gov. Geer has also received the word from the World, and today expressed his sympathy with the suggestion. The plan is to wire simul taneously to each state capital the mo ment Admiral Dewey arrives, and have the salutes tired immediately. Gov. Geer last evening sent tho following dis patch to tho World : "Oregon cannot t-iko any formal part in tho reception to Admiral Deuey, upon his arrival in Now York City, ow ing to tho great intervening distance.
