The Methodist church was crowded
last evening, on the occasion of the first
of the Niuareno lectures to ho given by
Hov. John U. Koohno. Many of tho
churches of tlio city hold no
evening services, heir congre
gations Joining in tho services huru and
taxing tho capacity of this, the largest
church In thu city, to Its utmost
capacity.
The preliminary exercises were very
fliort, consisting of the singing by the
choir of that good old hymn, "All
Hall the 1'owerof Josus' Name," and
short prayer by Nov. W. 0.
Kantner, alter which the pastor, Hov.
John I'ursous Introduced the lecturer of
the evening.

Dr. koohno asked the ushers not to
seat any more people, as It would ills

more young girls be given scats, as the
lectures were intomlod more particularly
for men.

prepared several years ago, to meet the

dience. A collection was then taken up, nfter
which Dr. Koohno again came forward
and explained that while no admission
fee was charged, those wcro not
free lectures, and he desired all to glvo
according to tholr ability Ho had re
signed from three lecture bureaus to
take up this work, and ho dooded on
tho honor of his audience to see that
his recompense was adequate. Thore
was no compulsion; it was simply u
matter of honor. Ho also explained
that these lectures wore not Intended
for ladies, hut fur mon. The ladles
didn't need thorn. However, ho invited
them to bring their husbands, brothers
and fathers, which may be construed
as a conditional invitation to attend'
