The yield being unusually large this year, being about 1000 boxes on 14 acres. At the close of picking he treated his pickers to Ice cream and cake which was followed by a dance and a mosj pleasant evening was spent by all present through the kindness of Downing & Newton,- pro prietors of the yard. rion. Steamer Rosalie arrived on the Sound last evening from SkaRway with sixty passengers from Dawson who brought out about half a million dollars In gold dust and drafts. William Stanley of Seattle had about 8160,000 In drafts. The 800 pounds of gold on which they were Issued was shipped down the river to St. Michael. John F. Miller, formerly prosecuting attorney of King county, camo from Lynn Canal on the City of Topeka. Miller estimates that tif teen or twenty of the Topeka's 'Dawson passengers brought nut from $5,000 to $15,000 In dust and exchanges each. 'The Klondike has many rich creeks and gulches," said Miller, "but of all these French Gulch mil Is the most wondeiful. It Is undoubtedly the richest spot In the camp, and I don't own any property there, cither, I'm sorry to say. Stalcy, the discoverer, has six men working on his claim and when I left and for soma time past, they had been rocking out $1,000 per day to the man. Another fellow whose name I don't remember took 200 pounds of nuggets from his claim In a single day and It vas Sunday at that. These mines on French mil are summer diggings all coarse gold and nuggets. I don't exaggerate when I say I saw an ordinary bath tub full of nuggets on French mil. These mines there are only eight or ten of the best paying ones are located on top of a hill 500 feet above the water leyel of El Dorado Creek. A thick growth of timber, little trees from two to six Inches In diameter, covered the hill when the gold dis covery was made. "Staleyr after learning of tho rich ness of El Dorado, contended that the gold In tho richest parts of tho creek had been washed from the top of the hill Into the stream. Many laughed at him when he expressed this opinion but he nevertheless proceeded to pros pect on top and found tho gold bed rock, being only fiye or six feet below surface." Rioting and Bloodshed New Ouleans, Sept. 13. The steamer Olympla, which has arrived here from Porto Cortez, brings news of serious rioting in Guatemala du ring the recent elections, In which It Is said 300 were killed and wouhded. The story of the rioting was brought from Porto Barrios to Porto Cortez by a trading schooner whose captain says the facts were kept off the wires by the government censor ship. Although Prospeio Morales had died after his capture by the govern ment forcts, his followers were III content to submit to tho election of President Estrada, and, although In no shape to make a strong fight In the balloting, gathered In force at the polls and considerable disorder fol lowed heated personal disputes. Troops had been posted near all the polls, and when the disorders became extensive the order to lire was glveu. Details are lacking, but according to the schooner captain, 300 persons were killed or fatally wounded. Much Distress in Alaska. Port Townsend, Wash., Sept. 13. ff. G. Strong, who arrlyed here today from at Michaels on the steamer Ga ronne, says the Garonne sighted con siderable wreckage west of Tunamlk pass. Tho wreckage appeared to bs that of a schooner, but no marks of Identification were found. Strum; savs Kotzebue sound has proven to be another source of disap pointment. Misfortune has been the lot of a large number of prospectors, who were lured to that section by stories of Its golden wealth. Parties Just from there report a most distres sing condition of affairs. Not one dollars worth of gold has been found, and 1,000 men are camped on the beach awaiting an opportunlry to get away, Nearly as many more are in the mountains, working their way to the beach to secure transportation out. Forty thousand dollars' worth of sup plies are piled on the beach and being offered for sale, but purchasers can not bo found. Three New Ships. Washington, Sept. 12. The navy denartment has -arrived at what It regards as a fair and satis. factory settlement of the question of awarding contracts for tho construc tion of three battleships. The battle ships are to have a speed of 18i knots, and Cramps, of Philadelphia, the Newport News Co., and tho Union Iron Works are to be given one each. Condemned, Charleston. S. O., Sept. 13. In the United States district court, Jus tice Brawley handed down a decision condemning the British steamer New foundland and Its cargo to forfeiture, Inualnwful nrlze of war. A pas sengcr train on inc Texas & racinc railroad plunged through a bridge twelve miles sourh of Texarkans, shortly after noon Monday. Four per sons arc reported killed outright, and a number of others are moro or less seriously wounded. The accident was due to high water, which had under mined the bridge.
