Here the conversation became a trifle embarasslnu, and the driver hardly knew how to proceed, when Mr. Durbln paid his fare, handed the driver a cigar and left him to ponder. DIED. PEEHLER.-ln Portland, Sept. 0. 1893. Mrs. Susan Peebler. Deceased was 11 sister of Hon. Hiram Smith, of this city, and of the late Dr. W. M. Smith, of Turner. The remains will be Interred In a cemetery In Linn county, and are to bo brought up Trom Portland on the Roscburg local train today. Mrs. Peebler was one of a family of eleven children, aud was aged about 53 years. MULVEY. At the family home, near Oregon City, at 10:45 o'clock d. m. on Saturday, September 3. 1898, of consumption, James Mulvey, aged 28 years. The funeral took place on Monday last. Reduced Rates. Seattle, Wash., Sept. 10. Alaska steamship rates have been slashed again the local association of Alaska steamship companies has cone to smash and deadly rate war has been Inaugurated and you can travel lirst class from Seattle toSkagway or Dyea for $25, or second-class for $15. There is also a prospect that rates will be still further reduced, as feel ing between the rival companies Is most bitter as a result of alleged vio lations of the agreement made by parties to the now" defunct combine. It Is alleged that the Washington Steamship Company was the Hrst. of fended against the rules of the "union." The steamer Discovery, it Is said, took passengers for Lynn canal ports, leaving hero September 2, for 815, giving Hrst class accommo dations on strecragc tickets. At the same time the association formed It was decided that rates must be main tained at something like uniformity, aui the following was agreed upen: To Dyea and Skagway, $40 first class and $25 second class;to Juneau. $35 and $22; to Wrangel, $30 and 20.
