IMPERIALISM.
What a Few of Out Exchanges Think of
It.
TI10 man or the party that purposes

from any place in cither hemisphere
to which it lias been advanced by
the valor of -our soldiers and sailors
will be reckoned with by the Ameri

When wc had whipped Mexico, In
order that wo mlehfc rctalnTcxas.and
the Ulty of Mexico had surrendered
to General Scott, why did we not keep
Mexico and not have 50 years later, a
lousy sliver standard country at our
doors? ITerels a Flilllpplno for our

Argus.
Political control under free trade or
equal trade privileges lias little
bearing on trade, save adversely
in so far saddling the col
onizing nation with nrrny and navy
administrative expenses as to burden
Industry. The United States, which
is deemed to require an excessive
tariff to protect its own home market
from British competition, Is proving
its ability to compcto successfully
with Great llritaln In thoso far oft
British colonies, and it is consequent
ly proving the utter absurdity of the
need of colonies to provide outside
markets, Our foreign trade, without
colonics, Is growing faster than the
trade of any colonial power of Europe.
Whatever this fact may not prove, It
certainly does show that the jingo
contention has not a leg to stand on.
Springfield Republican,
Why clasp to our bosoms 0,000.000 of

Think of the blood and treasure It

that will have to bo kept tliero to

Is not In the extent of territory but
rather In the happiness of Its subjects.

would boa good thing for tho Oregon

to the front and leave their sisters in

Does tua administration thick for a
minute that our citizens aro going on
dally paying a lieavy war tax for the
purpose of upholding a war of plill
anthrophy? Don't make any mis
take. We aro paying a war tax which
hurts, which comes out of us In hard
times, and all the colonics of Spain
must bo acquired to offset this great
tax on our pockets. Pendleton
Tribune.
Nothing could better exhibit the
uttor insanity of tho Imperialist
mind than such pitiful drivel as this,
written of a nation which has hardly
touched as yet the life-sustaining and
wealth-producing possibilities of
the land It already eccupies:
"The refusal to accept the responsi
bilities of the. Philippines which the
war has brought would bo a declara
tion to the world that the United
States of America has passed Its
prl nib, has lo-t Its energy and self-
contldence, and Is now, like elderly
Individuals, engaged chlclly In avoid
ing exposure and exertion."
Wc quote from the same authority
which less than four months ago was
opposing the war, opposing all the
opportunities of increasing our tcrrl
torlal area which the dullest mind
could perceive that a war with Spain
would bring, declaring that our needs
consisted chiefly In a reform of the
currency and the attraction of foreign
capital once more to these shores.

"I am an old run down soldier, my

temporary relief. I have been taklug

have derived more real benefit from them
thaa anything I have tried. My wife ha
been greatly helped by Ilood'a Barsapa

A Brick With a History.
Fl jrence West :A row days ago E.
C. Knowlesof Maplcton received by
express a brck which is a reminder of
his youthful days. Mr. Knowles was
born in New Hampslilrn in 1820. The
next year his father built u new house
and as was the custom of the time
it contained a large lire-place made
of brick. These brick he manufactured
himself near the site of tho house.
One day while he wasccgaged in this
work with his little son playing near,
the boy stepped on one of the soft
bricks leaving thereon a perfect print
of the little foot. Mr. Knowles
scratched the date (1821) on the brick,
burned and used It In constructing
tho lire place. Years passed away aud
the father haying died the son E. C.
Knowels now grown to manhood
came Into poscsslon of the homestead
which he afterwards sold and the
place passed to other hands. Mr.
Knowels moved to Minnesota many
years ago and; later came to Oregon.
The bricic with the root print on it
remained in Its plnre in the chimney
till some three or four years ago when
a nephew of Mr. Knowles obtained
It and gave it to his mother. She
sent It to her urother In Oregon who
received It 11
