Mr. Knowles was born in New Hampslilrn in 1820. The next year his father built u new house and as was the custom of the time it contained a large lire-place made of brick. These brick he manufactured himself near the site of tho house. One day while he wasccgaged in this work with his little son playing near, the boy stepped on one of the soft bricks leaving thereon a perfect print of the little foot. Mr. Knowles scratched the date (1821) on the brick, burned and used It In constructing tho lire place. Years passed away aud the father haying died the son E. C. Knowels now grown to manhood came Into poscsslon of the homestead which he afterwards sold and the place passed to other hands. Mr. Knowels moved to Minnesota many years ago and; later came to Oregon. The bricic with the root print on it remained in Its plnre in the chimney till some three or four years ago when a nephew of Mr. Knowles obtained It and gave it to his mother. She sent It to her urother In Oregon who received It 11 riw days ago and now he made lie can see tho size of truck nearly 80 years ago. The Band Tonight.
