Forest Grove Arthur Reeves' two-

Canyonyllle A small horse show
traveling through the mountains near
here stainpeded on the trail and pluu
ged over the grade. Several horses
were killed and the show will go out
of business.
Slolalla Fish arc being slaughtered
in the Molalla river by the use of
giant powder, and the people propose
to put on a patrol of special game
wardens.
Pendleton Louis Fletcher, the 14-year-old
son of W. n. Fletcher, was

ing for artesian water in Lakevicw Is
just now an Important topic, and a
practical test will no doubt be the
outcome of the agitation. There Is
little doubt that artesian water can
be had here In abundance, as the
"driving" of several wells within the
town limits shows a How of water In
exhaustible. Stampede at Big Taku.

Martin Bailey and family arc pre
paring to move to Tacoma In the near
future. They will be greatly missed
from our mldst.But we wish them well
wherever their lot may be cast.
Frank Soesbc, who has been work
ing In Portland since last winter, has
been ylsitlng with his parents here,
returned to Portland last Tuesday,
Mr. Chris Farlow and wife returned
from their visit to the cast on the eve
ning of the 0th, and were glad to get
home again. They report a pleasant
tlmo during their stay In the cast.
Ruby Eppler Is home again from al
most a year's stay In San Francisco.
The Marlon ware house Is again
running. Grain coming In slowly.
Mr. Pepper Is running the Eugene.

We have just been out and went
through Mr. R. T. Ray's now Stevens
dryer, which Is a daisy. The dryer
proper Is all ready for business, but
some out side work remains to be
done. If Mr. Ray does not turn out
some line dried fruit we shall be disap
pointed. From Seal Rocks,
The guests of Seal Rock Hotel gave
a dance last Monday evening which
will long be rembembcred by all
present. Promptly-at 9 o'clock the
orchestra started. Mr. W. II. Leeds
and Mr. Mary Payton led the grand
march, and uftcr several hours of
delightful music and dancing the
happy crowd dispersed.
Tuesday evening a bonfire was the
order. Mrs. Fro. Washburn dcljghtod
the audience with 11 beautiful vocal
solo accompanied on the violin by
Prof.Thorton ofJPortland, after stories
aud other songs, the merry throng
enjoyed roasted potatoes.
Wednesday a boating party was
very much enjoyed. This summer has

Drowned.
Rossland, B. C. Aug. 12. Harold
E. Robertson, banker and real estate
and Insurance broker, of Trail, was
drowned in the swift current of the
Columbia, In the presence of nearly
100 people, who were powerless to aid
him. Captain W.J. Devltt, provincial
olllcer, who was also In the captslzcd
boat, saved himself, after swimming
nearly two miles.
The two men were In a canoe, and
were caught In an eddy" Robertson
could not swim, Devltt brought him
up twice, but Robertson lost his
presence of mind and tried to right
the canoe, which overturned and sent
him to eternity. Devltt was cairled
two miles down stream until just
abovo the rapids, whpp )e got Into an
eddy and was saved, although com
pletely exhausted.
He was brought home on a horse,
but Immediately took charge of two
parties, who blasted the river all
afternoon in an attempt to raise Rob
ertson's body. The heat, excitement,
and exhaustion were too much, and
toward evening Devltt waa carried
! home unconscious.
Robertson was the successor to the
R.J. Bealy Company, at Trail. Ills
mother and brother live at North
Sldncv. Cane Breton. He leaves a
wife and Infant daughter. He was
