The death of Prince Hlstiiarck lias, nf course, cu grossel public attention throughout the week. While It cannot truth fully bj said that the impression created by the sudden death of the great chancellor was as deep at would have been evpectcd, and while there was ' nothing liko general mourning visible In Berlin, yet there was unmistakable evidence of- wide spread sympathy. The publications and revelations which so quickly fol lowed the death of the prince have naturally created a -sensation and deep anger In government circles, and there Is still greater surprise at the rescntuicnt In the attitude jf the Ulsmarck family. The emperor left nothing undone that could testify to his personal grief or the sense of the greatness of the loss to Germany. Ills proclama tion, addressed to the Imperial chancellor, Prince Hohcnlohe, has given high satisfaction throughout the country, and it is generally ad mitted that nallttjeimagnamlty was required to enable his majesty to pre serve such unrulllcd serenity in the face of the evident sullenness of the family. He devised most splendid publU: honors for the deceased states man, and when his efforts to place the latter's remains besides his grand father's were refused, the emperor carried out what was possible In the shape of a public funeral, regardless of tlie absence or all the Blsmarcks. As to the memoirs, there Is no antic ipation on the part of the government that any unpleasantness will result from their publication, and there is no intention to stop them." Among the public testimonials will be a great demonstration atNiedcr- wald, arranged by a number of Rhe nish cities, and a large memorial meeting takes place at tatuttgart and another at. Hamburg, where a public subscription has been opened for the erection of a giant monument to Prince Ulsmarck at Sachsenwald, There will be similar ceremonies at Breslau, Dresden, Lelpslg, Llcgnitz, Augsburg, Munich, Carlsruhc, Koen Igsberg, and other cities. Memorial to Wm. Le'dEerwood. Our rriend and brother William Ledgerwood has left us! He died July 23, 1893.11c was born in Campbell county, Tennessee, April 4..1811. His rather emigrated to Missouri in 1822; he was married to Miss Dellla Parson, November 13, 1837. ne and his wife came to Sonoma county.Callfornia in 1849, moved to Oregon in 18u9. where they have since resided. Eight years ago Mrs. Ledgerwood was called from life's labors to her reward in a better laud. Or nine children, foursons and five daughters, two sons and two daughters survive them. Brother Ledgerwood died in his 87th year. He was a man or strong convictions, and never failed to de clare them, If ho in hl3 opinion, duty or occasion called tor their expression.
