One feature of Frlduy's light which
aroused great Indignation among the
American troops is the act of the
Spaniards In having sharpshooters In
trees along the line of march of the
American troops. Of course if the
sharpshooters had fired on armed men
they would haye done nothing more
than might have been expected, but
one Spanish marksmamfrom his post
fired on wounded men and on men
carrying tlic wounded to the -rear.
Several members of the ambulance
corps were wounded in this manner,
and two men who were toiling alonp
to the rear were shot and killed.
Some of these marksmen were posted
less than half a mile from the Ameri
can camp. Colonel Llscum, Twenty
Fourth infantry, said:
"I was fired on seyeral times by
men in trees, and six bullets Hew very
close tome."
Later In the day a company of
cayalry was sent along to clear them
out, and the work was effectively
done.
The gallantry of American officers
was conspicuous during the fighting.
Major-Wheeler, who was seriously in
disposed the night before the battle,
was suffering from fever, On the
morning of the fight as soon as he
was aware that tne troops were likely
to be engaged, he ordered an
ambulance to convey him to the
front. His surgeon tried to dissuade
him, but the old general was obdurate,
and to tthe front he went. The
ambulance once there, the sound of
fighting restored his breath, and in a
short time he was calling for his
horse and personally directing his di
vision in the attack on the rear re
doubt.

redoubt of tho hill by his command,
nldcd by detachments from Wheeler's
division, he stood for a longtime on
tho summit of the 'redoubt watching
tho progress of the fight. A heavy
tiro at times was concentrated on the
spot where ho was standing, but frco
from apparent fear he surveyed the
field of battle while the bullets were
whizzing past by hundreds.
Lieutenant-Colonel Roosyclt was in
lront of his regiment throughout the
day, and his boot heel was carried
away by a pleoo of shell.
The greatest care and attention
was bestowed upon tho wounded mer,
and all were cared for In a very short
time after reaching the hospital. The
hospital of the second division was
established on the field, as was also a
cavalry division hospital. The hos
pital of the Frst division was es
tablished a short distance west of
General Shatter's headquarters, where
by 10 o'clock fully COO men had re
ceived medical attention. The seri
ously hurt were kept near the hos
pital, the officers being placed under
two large palms. Tho men were
placed upon tho ground the
tents and made as comfortable as pos
sible. The ambulance crops proved
very efficient, and no wounded men
were allowed to remain on the field
after dark.
The provisional hospital at Siboney
recclyed a large number of men, who
all night long loitered along the road
front as best they could. Wagons
conveyed many, but others preferred
walking, and throughout the night
the road was filled with the wounded,
who moved slowly along the path
kown to the scacoast.
Cervera Might Have Escaped.
Off Santiago de Cuba, July 6.

Admiral Cervera held a consultation
with his officers before sailing out of
the harbor of Santiago, and by a
small majority the move was agreed
upon, The minority said that de
struction was sure, as many of tho
firemen had mutinied, and the best
men in the fleet were worn out by
serving tho guns in the shore bat
teries. Early on the morning of the
sortie careful observations were taken
of the sea, Admiral Cervera decided
upon taking the westward course;
witb Munzanlllo, Clcnfuogos, or If
possible, Hayana the port to be
reacbed. He would have gone east
but for the sighting of the large
transport fleet off Siboney, and the as
surance that tho convoy of war ves
sels was still with the transports. As
a matter of fact there is no war vessel
larger than a converted yacht, except
the New York, that could have ob
structed Admiral Cervera's escape
eastward, ttaval men hero say that
the Spanish yessels could haye dis
abled or sunk the New York, and
escaped, had the eastwara course been
chosen.
What Cervera Said.
Off Santiago, July 4. Cervera
on being interviewed by an Associated
Press correspondent said, "I would
rather lose my ships at sea, like a
sailor, than in a harbor. It was the
only thing left for me to do."
On the Fourth Chas. Gray of Cove
shot three times at Albert Ahmes, of
Island City. One bullet took effect
in Ahmes' thy and one struck his sad
dle, while the third killed his horse.
Both were riding. Officers are pursu
ing Gray.

Washington, July 0. Tho bom
bardment of Santiago has been put off
for the present. News of Pando's ar
rival at tho doomed city has been con
firmed and Goneral Shatter has con
cluded to await' for reinforcements,
Fando and 6000 troops are scattered
thtuughout tho city and fortifica
tions. The heavy rain and heat of the
past week haye been very soyero upon
tho soldiers and many are sick.
Pando's reinforcements glyol- the
Spaniards new hope.
Iu the cabinet meeting, tho presl-.
dent directed that telegrams bo sent
tobUafter and ""Sampson, suggesting
that they confer as to the situation
and particularly as to the advisability
of the admiral's attempt to force a
passage into Santiago bay so as to be
in readiness to render effective aid in
the assault upon the city.
Orders were given looking to the
Immediate dispatch of troopships
from Tampa with reinforcements for
Shatter. It Is probable at least 15,000
will be sent forward as quickly as
transportation can bo provided.
THREE MURDEKS.
Results of aBloody Fourth of July in St.
Louis.
St. Louis, July 0. Three murders,
a propably fatal shooting, and a death
by burning Is tho record of July 4th
In St. Louis. Fred Losse, a huckster,
was stabbed to death, and a compan
ion, Jack Ormes, so seriously stabbed
ho cannot live. A party of men were
shooting clay pigeons on Losse's farm.
Losse returned home from celebrating,
accompanied by Ormes, and remons
trated 'vitli the sportsmen. A fight
ensued, resulting iu Losse's death.
II. W. Mans, a street-car conductor,
was shot and killed while on his car
by an unknown negro, who escaped.
Frank T. Sasse, a bicycle rider, was
shot through the heart and Instantly
killed while wheeling on Locust street.
The man who fired tho' shot escaped.
Fannie Hlttler, a little girl, set fire
to her dres3 while exploding firecrack
ers, and was burned to death.
Ed Middleton, a negro, was shot in
the neck and will die. The shooting
was the result of an old grudge.
Spanish Cabinet Divided.
London, July 6. The Madrid cor
respondent of the Daily Chronicle
says:
The enthusiasm of tho Spanish sol -dlers
continues, but there is bitter re
sentment for the bad military and
nayal organization, and resignation of
the responsible ministers is demanded.
The war fever Is running high. The
cabinet is diyided Into peace and war
parties. An uneasy feeling has been
caused by the general precautions be
ing taken.
Admiral Caniara will pass through
the Suez canal today (July 6.) Tho
destroyers are returning to destroy
Commodore Watson's squadron. Tho
coast towns are being rapidly fortified,
particularly Cabera and Chorrucles,
commanding Glbreltar bay, with the
object of preventing the Americans
from coaling.
There are renewed rumors regard
ing the exchange of bank notes at
Ilgeclrasand iBadaJos, General Gn
manzo, minister of public instruction
and public works, talks of precaution
infavorof the attitude of the work
ingmen of Castilla.
Dunsmuir Swept By Fire.
Sacramento. Cal , July 6. -A
special to tho Bee says tho town of
Dunsmuir, in Siskiyou county, on the
line of the California &Oregon rail
road, was almost swept out of
existence by a fire.
The fire started at 2 a. m. and, owing
to a high north wind which prevailed,
was soon beyond control, The town's
water was entirely Inadequate to
supply the demand. Twenty-flye
buildings were destroyed in the
business section, and it was only by
tho heroic efforts of the towns-people
that the residence section escaped tbe
flames, The loss will exceed $50,000
with but little insurance.
The population of Union is now 1500,
Over 5,000 people celebrated at Dal
las. A lot ot glandered horses baye been
reported at Baker Cty.
The bicycle path has been completed
from Oregon city to Gladstone park,
Saturday was the first regular pay
day ot the Union, Oreon woolen mills.
A 3-year-old son of Thomas Rhoadeo
of Albany, was badly booked by tbe
family cow Friday afternoon,
Leonard Cole, of Baker City, lias
sued John Ralston, claiming $100 spe
cific and $10,000 general damages for
malicious prosecution.

tion in Its recent victorious fight on a
gold platform. Ex-Senator Mitchell
was striving Secretly for the defeat of
tho party on such a platform. Sena
tor MoBrlde Is spoken ot as Mitchell's
man, and together they worked tho
administration successfully for a
patronage which was lukewarm or
hostile to tho party all through the
state campaign. No help came from
tho federal offlceboldlng ring engi
neered by Mitchell and McBrlde, who
expected andj hoped toseo the party
beaten, and who then thought to bo
able to clinch their control of tho
state. But tho result is that Mitch
ell has been tboroughly discredited
and will be cast out. He ha9 earned
such a fate, for he appears to be an
unprincipled sel f-seeker.
