The day was celebrated on tho Sandwich Islands, and no doubt natives, insur gents and Americans united In its joyous observance at Manila. Our telegraphic reports show that tho day was observed In many places in Great Britain, that even those against whoso governmental policy It was originally n protest, aro learning to appreciate tho higher meaning of tho ovent, and huyo the breadth, justice and liberality to publicly acknowledge that the colonists were right in separating from the mother country. Independence day now moves the heart of the world to thoughts of freedom and equality. Tho splendid achievements of American arms in Santlugo In the cause of human liberty sets this date again beforo the world as tho red letter day of human ity. After peace has been declared there may arise differences as to the dispo sition of tho territory, tho administra tion of Cuba and tho Manilas. FOR A HOSPITAL SHIP. Patriotic People of Pacific Coast Asked for Funds for That Purpose, The Jouiinal has received tho fol lowing from Mrs. Chas. R. Grecnllef, of Borkley, Cal: To tho Pcoplo of tho Pacific Ceast: Tho nroject of having tho peoplo of tho Pacific coast present to the United States government a hospital ship has been repeatedly mentioned In tho press. A public uppcal Is now mado to nil patriotic pcoplo for con tributions toward this great undertaking. Tho pcoplo of Massachusetts have just now presented a hospital ship to tho government at the cost of $150,000. This ship Is for transport service botweon tho West Indies and the North, that tho sick and the wounded may bo Bafcly conyoyed to suitable cllmato and quarters, and Its service Is supplementary to that of othor ships which lly tho banner of tho Red Cross on the Atlantic. Wo have not a single ship of cuts sort on tho Pacific, und wo should havo It ut once. Tho estimate cost of one which should bo adequato for the needs of the service, is $300,000. This Is a largo sum to ralso, but there can bo no dllllculty in doing so, If public Interest can bo thoroughly aroused. It Is suggested thut tho greater part must bo raised by ton cent subscrip tions on the part of children nnd dollar subscriptions on tho part of nthors. Tho monoy must bo raised by tho local societies, and administered by tho stato societies, until tho ship Is turned over to tho government. Tho need of tho ship Is absolute; this method of securing It was llrst offic ially suggested by Colonel Chas. It. Grccnlcuf, chief surgeon of tho United States armies in the Held, and has tho itrongost approval of tho surgeon general. Tho ship under tho Red Cross Flag Is protected from capture or Injury by tho terms of tho Geneva convention. Hampton, Mass., July G. A tor nado struck this section of Hampton beach at 3:45 p. m. yesterday, causing Immense dammagc to beach property and great loss of life. Cottages were blown flat, horses were picked up bod ily and dashed against buildings, vehicles were carried many feet, barns unroofed, largo trees snapped off at tho roots, while others were torn up bodily. The tornado touched the beach a half mile north of Wh I ti ler's hotel, and cut a swath 100 yards wide In a westerly dlrcctlan, moylng rotary shape. Twenty cottages wero torn down and small hotels were completely wrecked. The greatest loss of life and Injury came with the demolition of the old skating rink near Lealtls, a two story wood structure 100x100 feet Hero from ten to 11 f teen persons were Injured, and several are already dead. A yacht owned .by Captain Frank Mudd, was In the path of the storm. In It wero nine people, and of these tiyc were drowned. Tho drowned are: Walter Gertrude and Ralph Hodgson, Kensington, N. II.; Mrs. W. II. Parker, Kensington; Captain Mudd, Hampton. The list of the dead on shore, as compiled at 8 o'clock was: Mora, an actress of New York, who was play lug 'The Blowing Up of tho Maine." Miss May Presscottc, of Exter; Samuel Campbell, of Exter; "William Carleton, of Exter. Among those thought to be fatally Injured In tho payllllon arc: Miss O. D.Prcssey, Haverhill, fractured skull; W. n. Barbey, Exter, internal Injury. arrived off Cavltc at 5 o'clock yesterday evening, after an uneventful voyage. On tho way here the Charleston called at Guam, the largest of the Ladrone Islands, a group In the Pa cific which belonged to Spain, took possession of the whole group, made prisoners of Goyernor-General Marina, his staff and the entire military force, and raised the Stars and Stripes oyer the ruins of Santa Cruz, the fort In harbor at San Luis Darpra. The troops are In good condition and our only loss was Private Hutch inson, of the First Oregon, who died on the City of Sydney on June 20, and was burled at sea on June 21.
