To the Editor of the Oregonlan. Portland, May 20. Professor Ac keruian, In his reply to Superintend ent Lyman in yesterday morning's Orcgoniun, gives me an uucxpcctcd prominence, not entirely relevant to his text. 1 should make no comment upon the long apology of Professor Ackermin if he had left nie out of It, but he asserts that I am an agent of Glnn & Co,, and makes the apparent intention of apprising the conscien tious voter of the peril that threat ens educational "interests" In case of my election to the legislature. 1 am not the agent of Glnn & Co. and am conyinced Professor Ackcr erman knows I am not in any way connected with them, except that our linn btijs from them the few books required in ourschools, as wedo from the American Hook Com pat) y and others. How profitable and impor tant that connection must be will readily appear to anybody who will look into the proportion of book9 in use this state and city published by Glnn & Co. No "educator" need take the trouble to look up the ligures; they all know very well already. I cannot be quite sure, from tbe Delphic character of the- professor's final thurst. whether he means that I am furnishing a lack of support to Mr. Lyman op himself. Does Prof. Ackerman recall a circular which was gotten out as a 'campaign document four years ago, to which many prom inent educators subscribed, attacking Irwin, the Republican candidate for superintendent of public instruction, and urging Reid's election (the Dem ocratic nominee)? Perhaps he re members the loyal, public-spirited gentleman who paid for printing and attended to mailing thousands of those circulars. I call the attention 'of the editor, who made the deduction that Profes sor Lyman had treated the question of price uncandldly, to the fact that 17 books appear In the Lyman list quoted by Professor Ackerman, while there are but 10 in his own list. Ack erman charges Lyman with two ele mentary geographies, making a false credit of 65c in that item for himself while further comparison shows 81-08 in LymanM favor in the total. Even a nomination does not seem to mo an irrefutable proof of Professor Ackerman's title to my vote. Since lie charges me with being what I am not, gratuitously, he may not need it; though I have twice publicly urged the people who heard me to support the whole state ticket nominated at Astoria. The people who like a pub lslier's attorney at the head of the house committee on education and who "supported the ticket" In thecawe of Dr. Irwin fouryears ago, by the cir cular which 1 refer to will not hesitate about supporting Mr. Ackerman, I am sure, "aneomce lsuumuiy un political," as Mr. Ackerman's letters to Populist friends allege. In fact, by "deputizing," a thrifty man might hold a "prlncipalness" and the superlntendency, too; but neither Young nor Crawford will ever get both at once. The Union County Central Commit tee held a long session at Woodburn last night and closely investigated the character of the charges brought against II. L. Barkley, candidate for Joint senator of Marion and Clack amas counties. They had Rev. Bark ley, Rev. Rhys Gwynn, Mr. Corby, and all other material wit nesses before them and their findings are as follews: THE COMMITTEE STATEMENT. We the undersigned have Investi gated the Insinuated charges made against Hon. II. L Barkley in the Dally Statesman of May 22, 1803, and the Oregon City Enterprise of May 27, 1808, and we are fully satisfied that they are utterly falso and unfounded and that the same liayo been made for political purposes. In the course of our Investigation we have found that Rev. R. Gwynn has made conflicting and vacillating statements in which, In our opinion, he showed mental -weakness, and we are of the opinion that his statements are entirely unreliable. We also find that the fin- -IniHe let ter published had no refcrei ce what ever to the secreting of T. II. Mitch ell or anyother dishonorable transac tion. m From the Dubllshed affidavit cf T. II. Mitchell and other facts brought before us during the investigation we are of the onlnlon that the state ments of said Mitchell arc not worthy of cons deration. We, therefore, have full confidence in the honor and Integrity of Hon. 11. L. Barkley, and we aro fully satisfied that he has not been connected with any questionable or dishonorable transaction.
