EPT LIE A CHILD. Gained Twenty-Seven The Story From the Tranicrtpt, Tiorla, lit. No man Is better known and liked In that rich tie; of Illinois counties, of which Peoria is the centre, than genial Cheater S. Harring ton, of Prlnceville, 111. For many years Mr. Harrington has traveled through the country on profitable journeys as an itinerant mer chant, and everywhere he goes he is Riven a hearty welcome by the people who depend upon his visits for the aurchnse of the neces saries, and some of the luxuries, of life. Mr. Harrington is a veteran of the war, and from this fact is made the remarkable experience which he related at the Trans cript office recently. His story, telling of the evils of which the Civil War was but the beginning in his own, and In thousands of other cases, was as follows : " I served three years in the 124th Illinois, enlisting at Kewanee. 111. I was in Libby Prison, and suffered, like many another North ern soldier. Until recently I vas a member of the Prinoeville Post,of thcG.A.Il. "The strain of army life did its work In nndermining my health, although the col lapse did not come for years. For some time I suffered from general debility and nervous ness, so badly that I could not sleep. For fifteen years my sleep was completely broken up. Indigestion, resulted and my misery In creased. My eyes began to fail, and as my body lost vitality my mind seemed to give way also. I could scarcely remember events that happened but a few weeks before. "For two years I was unfitted for busi ness. I was Just able to creep around during the greater part of this time, and there were times when I could not get up at all. My brother is a doctor, but all bis efforts to help me failed to give me any relief. I tried a number of remedies, without avail. Finally, having read articles regard ing cures that had been effected byDr.Wil 1 ams Pink Pills for Pale People, I deeided k try them. That was In 1890. I bought a box nnd took the pills according to in structions. Just four days later I had the UNION IN POLK COUNTY. What the Ticket Stands for Its Grow ing Strength, Independence, Or., May 18, 1898. Editor Jeurnal: We are having a very quiet campaign In Polk county, yet the voters are dolntr a great deal of thinking. The average citizen cannot understand how It Is that our county Is nearly $80,000 In debt when we haye for the past two years been to comparatively little ex pense In bridge building or other county improvements. The county Is run by a purely gold standard ad ministration, and Instead of taxation growing less with an Increase of pop ulatlon It is constantly on the In crease. The people are slow toacti but once they are aroused their con demnation of wrong doing will be signal and complete. From all sides words of commendation of the Union ticket Is heard and the people Intend electing every one of the candidates presented by that, party for tuelrsuf fragesby majorities rearchlng Into the hundreds. The representative ticket is led by J. B. Stump and Noah Gregg, two of our most successful farmers. Men whose word Is their bond and men who do not claim they are working for their wives for wages, In order to defraud their creditors.
