It might be remarked that Salem has a good sup ply of patriotic orators In reserve. So many persons offered us potatoes on subscription last year, wo arc nol urging anyone to plant spuds this year. Pap Parkhurst says he is not In the Sultan business but conllnes himself strictly to the Agricultural Imple ment line. Old Bill Anderson, the most widely known Salem saloon keeper, Is not complaining that ho has not help enough to move his stock. Astoria politicians will not allow the Salvation army to parade the streets, but they want to return Charles Runaway Fulton to the senate. Salem has four men of about the same weight physically who would make a splendid Sultan: E. F. Park hurst, T. L. Dayidson, Frank Talk. Ington and Gov. Fletcber. That will.be a title that will be come him: Sultan, And then Gov ernor Fletcher will no longer be jeal ous of any man's title of colonel. But the ladles will never make him Sul tiu. If your business Is running down or stock accumulating on your shelves, you ars not a good advertiser or you are spending your money on a poor medium that does not reach the people Modesty forbids a suggestion. The news comes that President. Mo Kinley has ordered the battleship Or egon back to the Pacific coast. The president has military ideas some what like those of an ancient king of Spain, 'who made his men march up the hill, and then march down again. People look to The Journal for news, to the Independent for humor, to the Sentinel for sound Republican ism, but a man out at the asylum, who draws the line at the purely In tellectual, reads nothing but States man editorials. A typographical error made the Capital Journal say yesterday, 'Messrs." Bob Hendricks, when It should have read "Muses, Bob Hen dricks." As the great Statesman has been agonlz'ng much of late over an occassional typographical error In the Jouunal, It now has a chance to ask; " fVhy 'Messrs' Bob nendrlcks? He's not so many." Consternation reigns In the Repub lican headquarters. Among the tons of campaign literature sent out from the east to catch voters there was a vast amount that was a trifle old. It advocated free coinage straight and gave the Cleveland "gold standard robbeis" particular tits, just as the Republican campaign text book of 1890 did. But then consistency long ago ceased to be a Republican virtue. 399999999999939999993& -a Si o n '. OFULA. One of America's most fa mous physicians says: "Scrof ula is external consumption." The following Is the platform adopted by the republican party of Oreson In "' ronventlcn assembled, at Astoria, Tturtwray, April 14, 1S98: ' ' the republican voters of the stnte of Oregon, In convention assem bled, congratulate tho people of the stato as well as of the whole nation on the unmistakable fact that the dark cloud of adversity, which has hung like a. pall over our fair land, has been dis sipated. We recognize that tHa return of prosperity Is due to the restoration of the republican party to power. "We are In favor of the maintenance of the present gold standard; we are unqualifiedly opposed .to the free coin age of silver and to all other schemes looking to the debasement of the cur rency and the repudiation of debt. We btilieve that the best money In the world Is none too good to be assured by the government to the laborer as the fruit of his toil and to the farmer as the ptlce of his crop. Wo condemn the continued agitation of free silver as calculated to jeopardise the prosper ity of the country and to shake the confidence of the people In the main tenance of a wise financial policy; wo particularly condemn as unpatriotic, tho effotts of the free silver agitators to array class against class and sec tion against section; we declare that tho Interests of all classes and of all Kectlons of our country alike demand a sjund and stable financial system. "While we deplore tho Imminence of war, wo recognize that the country Is .in the eve of a -war, undertaken for the vindication of the national honor and the perfoimance of a work dictated by every Instinct of humanity; we de clare that tho administration Is en titled In this conflict to the confidence and support of the entire people. 'We are firmly attached to the prin ciples of the federal constitution; we rvcognlzo that representative govern ment 13 one of these principles, and we i ate opposed to any change In law or constitution which will abrogate this time-honored principle. "We are In favor of retrenchment and reform In state and county mat ters. "Wo demand strict economy In pub lic affairs, and the abolition of all needless offices and commissions. "The salmon fishing Industry, so fruitful a source of revenue to the state, should be fostered, and to that end we favor state aid In the artificial propagation of salmon, and their dis tribution In the waters of the state. "We reaffirm our allegiance to the principles of the republican party of the United States, as enunciated by the republican convention In St. Louts in 1836. "We denounce the fusion party of Oregon as tin aggregation of spoils men. who are ready to subordinate principles to offices. Each of the par ties to this compact ts willing to stul ilfy Itself and form alliances with ele ments which it has heretofore de- nuuncU as dangerous and unfit to be ! intrusted with power; we declare that , gjjd iovsrnment cannot come from U'h n alliance." AUdroKElsUfceiremforSfef UNION PLATroHM The following Is the platform ad r- Jed by the People's, Democratlo na3 .Silver Republican parties assemble)' i state conventions at Portland, Mri 3-26, lSDSi United In a common cause for the sacred purpose of preserving the prin ciples of government by the whole peo ple. In fact 03 well as In name, restor ing and maintaining equality, under lhat government, of all classes, we. the I People's Democratic and Silver Repub 1 lican parties of tho state of Oregon, J waiving all minor points of difference, and uniting for the purpose of carrying . out the jsreat underlying principles ' Jion which we are all agreed, do make I and present to the people of this state I the following declaration of principles, and to the carrying out of which we I solemnly pledge each and every candi date upon our united ticket: First We demand the free and Unre stricted coinage of silver and gold at the present legal ratio of 16 to 1, with out waiting for the consent of foreign nations; and we are unalterably op posed to the policy of the present re publican administration In demanding the retirement of greenbacks, and the turning1 over of the money-making power of the government to the na tional banks, as presented by the bill drawn by the republican secretary of tho treasury, and indorsed by Pres dent McKinley; and we especially de nounce the avowed attempt by said bill lo fasten the country irrevocably and forever to the slncle cold standard. Wo demand a national money, safe Hnd sound, Issued by tho genernl gov ernment only, without the intervention of batiks of Issue, to be a full legal lender for all debts public and private, also a just, equitable and efficient means of distribution direct to the peo ;ilr through the lawful disbursements of the government. W demand that the volume of circu lating medium be speedily Increased to an amount sufficient to meet the de mands of the business and population .if this country, and to restore tho Just level of prices of labor and production. We favor such legislation as will pre vent for the future the demonetization of any kind of legal tender money b pitvate contract. We demand that the government, In payment of Its obligations, shall use Its optlun as to the kind of lawful money In which they are to be paid, and we denounce the present and prc cecdlug administrations for surrender ing this oDtlon to the holders of gov ernment obligations. We demand that there shall be 11c fuither Issue of United States Interest beuiing bonds. We demand that postal savings banks he established by the government for the safe deposit of the savings of the people and to facilitate exchange. We demand the election of United ritatea senators by direct vote of the people. We demand the Initiative and refer endum system of law-making In Its optional form, focat, state and national, and the submission by congress of all important national questions for an ad visory vote of the people, until such time as the national constitution shall have been amended so as to provide for direct legislation. We condemn 03 dangerous and un just the surrender, In all departments of the government, to tho lnlluence of trusts, corporations and aggregations of wealth generally; and the packing of the highest courts of the land with cor poration lawyers, too ready to do the will of their late employers, and to set aside valid and wholesome laws passed by the legislative departments of the states and government, upon flimsy pietexts, at the behests of such Insti tutions. We are opposed to government by injunction. In state matters, we demand; A simple and well-guarded registra tion law. A mere equitable mode of appointing Judges of election. Stringent laws to regulate the opera tion of fish traps, fish wheels and all fishing gear In the waters within the Jutisdlctlon of the state. We denounce and condemn the cor rupt nnd extravagant republican legis lative assemblies, and charge that the republican party, In Its eagerness for the spoils of office, has become divided Into warring factions, so that it Is in capable of government as exemplified by the condition existing In the office of the state treasurer, there being at this time more than $500,000 therein wrung from the peoplo by the process of taxation, while state warrants are stamped "Not paid for want of funds." Wo demand that all district and county officers be placed upon salaries commensurate with the duties to bo peifoimed by them. Inasmuch as railroad and other cor porate property Is not bearing Its pro portion of taxation, we demand that such property shall bear its Just and equal share of the expenses of govern ment. Or.
